Tiny Core Linux

Specially with release 4.2 3rd party USB installers like Unetbootin or Universal-USB-Installer can't be used as they do not aware TC's special characteristics. Built-in installer requires running TC. If someone is curious enough and can burn a CD, next is installer options, selection right, mode, ... To be honest, my latest tries to install 4.2 on USB with TC's own installer failed.
To overcome these problems and to offer a fast and easy route to get started with (Tiny) Core Linux I wrote a dedicated Windows USB installer, core2usb.
Key features:
- designed exclusively for Tiny Core Linux
- supports TC 4.x series including 4.2
- portable, no Windows installation needed
- safe
- preservs original boot options
- adds WAITUSB=5 boot code automatically
- can create /tce directory on target drive optionally
It comes with a GUI:
For more info and download visit:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/core2usb/ (http://sourceforge.net/projects/core2usb/)
Please note it is a beta test software tested on XP and Vista. There may be bugs, however it is safe to play with, no risk to demage hard disks :) Try it and send me your feedback at SourceForge. Please do not use this forum for core2usb support.
-
I suggest giving a description of how to use it, and what it can do. For example.
Does it install to FAT32, NTFS or Linux filesystem, or any?
Can it be used to install to a hard drive?
You say "No Windows installation needed." Can it be used without Windows?
Just all of the basic things people may want to know.
You may do this on the sourceforge website if you think that is best.

Did you read WIKI?
-
Maybe I missed it. What is the link?
-
Well, my WIKI page with the manual is gone for unknown reason, I will reupload.
However, project description says:
"Windows program to install Tiny Core Linux on USB stick. " Obviosly a WIndowes Program need Windows to run.
In the feature list told :
"- portable, no Windows installation needed"
Do not use modifyid sentence when you are arguing. Google will help you to find out what is a portable Windows application.
-
To be honest, my latest tries to install 4.2 on USB with TC's own installer failed.
It looks like this will be really useful for people running Windows. What kind of problems did you run in to with tc-install on 4.2?

Simple, created USB stick didn't boot ;)

Not a very helpful answer as ...
Not stated which mode USB-HDD or USB-ZIP was used.
Not stated what BIOS options are available on target hardware.
I suspect that your hardware requires USB-FLOPPY which is partition-less, as that is what unetbootin provides.
-
Right, but actually I have no more details as I gave up after spending more time with installer as I expected without success. I can retest it and send details however.
Regarding core2usb it is neutral wether TC's installer works or not as it requires a working TC which is not the case for a newcomer installing his or her first TC.
-
See tc-install test result in a new forum at http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12243.0.html (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12243.0.html)
Keep this thread clean of non core2usb related discussion.

New version, core2usb10beta2 is available for download at SourceForge.
Changes:
- more error mesages and warnings added
- 'Target drive is not empty' warning can be ignored
-
Great markus, I can now respond with easiness to the question "how do I install core from windows"

Great markus, I can now respond with easiness to the question "how do I install core from windows"
Thanks :) On which Windows version did you test?
-
I learned of this program just now, anyway I will test it on windows 7 these days!
-
Ok, tested with coreplus and windows7,
It works, I only have a couple of notes:
- I thought that the program pre-format the memmory but it does not (maybe it's better that way)
- If the drive contain a folder named \boot, the program show an error and does not continue
- if the memory is formatted (and empty), the program continues to demand "Target driver is not empty. Do you want to continue?". However it may be that Windows places files in it after it is formatted
-
Thanks for testing.
For safety reasons core2usb doesn't format drive. There are many ways to do that.
Also for safety, program do not overwrites boot or cde directory, you must provide a blank USB. It can be change later of course.
I'm using WINDOWS API riporting full/free capacity and in certain cases It is not the same when drive is empty. I will change it. In beta2 you can ignore message and continue.

in fact I was not blocked by this message, but it might be a bit 'of disorientation.
If you are unable to have a more precise result, you may change the message in "if you are aware that the disk could not be empty, would you continue?"
:o :P
-
I will check files instead of capacity.

so bmarkus, I'm concerned as to what exactly is wrong with Universal-USB-Installer, since I use the tool exclusively, even today many times producing USB's with seemingly fully functioning tc 4.2 installs. if there is some feature of tc4.2.1 which is not supported I'd kinda like to know what that is I'm missing please.
Am looking forward to using your installer app too soon

If you are happy with universal installer or any other, just use it. It's a free world.
-
@coreplayer2 There is at least one difference, unetbootin encapsulates the boot menu in another submenu, Instead core2usb install natively.
This means that if you use the customizzation "tinycore" you can skip the intermediate step with coreplus (unless you need the wifi)

Regarding unetbootin, it is adding core.gz and vmlinuz to the USB additionally as ubninit and ubnkern, so you have them twice which is unnecesary. Also, boot doubling bootmenu items. This overhead do not offer any benefit, just wasting storage space.

Universal-USB-Installer
- copies isolinux.bin and isolinux.cfg to the USB but they are not used, as syslinux installed, they are not needed
- original boot config not used but replaced universal's own boot
- overwrites volume label; can't switch off; label is used during boot which is not necessary
- do not handle tce dir, if you want to use created USB stick you must tweak manually after installation
Otherwise nothing wrong.
-
vinnie We stopped using unetbootin long time ago... but differences? what are we comparing it too?
-
Ah ha! ok I see now, I had noticed something amiss with the various copies of syslinux, not really knowing the difference (other than their usage) between the various versions of syslinux, just looks like all bases are covered is all.
I use the "Unlisted Linux ISO (New Syslinux)" from the selection of distros when installing core 4.2.
I look at the overwriting of USB label as a positive thing. looks like the only possible point of interest is the tce directory support, which honestly i don't understand. I'm thinking we must be talking about a tce dir outside of the normal install? So it's expected to add a customized tce folder to the USB later right?
The only operational issue I have with Universal-USB-Installer (AKA Pendrivelinux) is the unusual behavior in which it doesn't always partition and format the thumb drive. still a minor issue though and one I'm willing to overlook (maybe it's my fault anyhow..) because of the utilities outstanding ability to produce a reliable and consistent bootable tc USB thumbdrive ..
The ability to erase , partition and format would be better. Is this a feature we can look forward to in core2usb please ?
-
The ability to erase , partition and format would be better. Is this a feature we can look forward to in core2usb please ?
It is not planned on purpose, at least now. Primary goal is to offer an easy and safe way to start with TC on WINDOWS for newbies. If this goal is erached, maybe an 'advanced' mode can be introduced but not now.
Partioning and formatting can be done with many tools, even with Windows and it is not TC specific.
-
I look at the overwriting of USB label as a positive thing.
Overwriting volume label is ugly and unpolite, specially when new label is the same for all created drives. It is a kind of free software with commercial ads. Also, reduction of your freedom. And technical wise comletely unnecessary.
Also, why to put a 49k Universal-USB_Installer copyright and another readme file on target disk when installer itself is not copied there? I do not understand.
I hate it.
-
Hi bmarkus
Overwriting volume label is ugly and unpolite, specially when new label is the same for all created drives.
Agreed.
a 49k Universal-USB_Installer copyright
Wow, at 80 characters per line and 60 lines per page, that's more than 10 pages, seems a bit
excessive.
@coreplayer2:
I look at the overwriting of USB label as a positive thing.
Really? I'm pretty sure that if you had set your machine up to automatically perform certain operations
base on the label of a connected USB device, you would change your mind, especially if you had two
of them plugged in at the same time. Of course you could always switch over to using UUID, but as
bmarkus points out:
Also, reduction of your freedom. And technical wise comletely unnecessary.
Besides, using a UUID is a good way to get people to conform to the way a machine does things,
using a label is a good way to get a machine to conform to the way a person does things.
If something truly requires a UUID, blkid is capable of providing that information. It's about choice.

First stable version of core2usb is just released. There are many smaller internal changes and a new GUI. Worth to try.

H'mmm well ok I see your point at last, yes I'm sure that would be frustrating, luckily for me am not accustomed to using labels, only UUID.. When i see Pendrive as a label I can at least visually and quickly identify which drive just got prepared as compared to a couple of others whose labels are Patriot or something.. It's a visual thing and the way I do things. Still interesting to see how other folks do things. if the label needs changing then it gets changed.. done with no fuss.
maybe I just turned a potential hazard into a positive thing for me.. I will say this, would have been better had they given a choice or at least an opportunity to write your own label.. Everybody else does that right? :p
-
core2usb looks like it's making good progress, well done.
Any chance of adding the option to add home and opt along with tce please? That would be useful too.
Be appreciated if the open dialog had an option to open in the same directory as the app was located. I used an app which had that behavior a while back, boy that was so useful.
-
Still interesting to see how other folks do things. if the label needs changing then it gets changed.. done with no fuss.
I'm using 3 USB sticks with TC, moving around data between TC/WINDOWS, notebook/desktop, etc. Labels indicate usage and installled opsys if any, like TCE4DEV, TC4rc1, SLAX, ... Imagine all with just PENDRIVE. Well, they look different with different capacity, but sometime they are plugged to the back of my CentOS box what I do not see from my desk and even more than one is plugged. S I need my labels.
-

What do you mean? It is a good idea to make possible to add boot options or edit it.
Or you mean put home directory to the created stick? If so, it is not possible on FAT partion.
-
Oh yeah you're right, don't know why I was thinking ext2..
must be getting late..
However many (including myself) format a USB thumb drive with ext2 to create a frugal install.. so maybe not such a bad idea after all
-
... Imagine all with just PENDRIVE. S I need my labels.
I understand.. In my opinion, no matter how many thumb drives are knocking around my place, there is only a limited number of ports to plug them into, so it's kinda a moot point IMHO. Where there is a clash just change the label, easy as that right? Having said that, I understand if you rely on labels, someone interfering with your system would understandably irritate anyone...
-

However many (including myself) format a USB thumb drive with ext2 to create a frugal install.. so maybe not such a bad idea after all
primary goal for core2usb was to offer easy start up on windows without CD burning and without manual tweaking like using unetbootin or other windows generic installers.
My standard USB setup is a small, 64MB FAT partition to move data betwwen LINUX and WINDOWS and an EXT4 partition for LINUX itself. Journaling file system is a must have, it saved my life many times. Ext2 is just like a FAT, can be corrupted easily. Reduced life time is just an urban legend. I have never seen any USB stick died due to too much writes. I have seen lost, broken sticks or cheap ones gettin faulty after 2-3 month but not because of intensive use. Also, they are cheap. For sure loss of data is costing more than a theretically demaged USB stick.
However, I have a draft idea fore core2usb which can create a proper USB stick layout and setup with native LINUX file system starting from WINDOWS and downloaded ISO.
BTW, if anyone interested core2usb is a python program.
-
So
Be appreciated if the open dialog had an option to open in the same directory as the app was located. I used an app which had that behavior a while back, boy that was so useful.
By that i mean is it's common to drop the iso to usb app in the same directory as the ISO's, I think many do this. it's really handy then to select browse and have that window open in the same directory as the ISO (the one which we just dropped our new core2usb exe into..?) A relative path as opposed to a temp dir some random place on the system.? That would be helpful.
Even better if there were settable default user options :) easy for me to say right? perhaps in a future version.
-

How do I know where ISO's are stored? Agree, tmp directory is ugly and not useful. But ISO can be anywhere on your PC. What would be better to open file browser in the root or the Document folder.
-
New core2usb version, 1.2 released. ISO file browser opens root directory instead of temp dir.

Markus
this is a very good tool.
Why isn't it on the "installation" and "download" section of the greetings page for
tinycore linux.
I was thinking that thousands of people bump into tinycore linux while web
browsing on a windows computer....and they just want to try Tinycore...
(there are ways to do this with tools...that create a QEMU virtual machine
and you would get tinycore up and running inside win32 instantly...)
but i like your installer here....as long as peope realize they need to have
a correct partition available on a pen drive....they need to know that the laptop
will boot from USB...(bios settings) (or they can use PLOP on CD disc or Floppy disk
or on PCMCIA card)
I think there must be many world wide web surfers who come across Tinycore
and want to try it quikly...
i banged on about a CFG LOOP tool that was available in some linux distros....
which was somehow able to allow a person to download an ISO to the linux desktop
and then have the computer actually boot into that new ISO operating system (no burning
or installing was done) That idea never materialzed with Tinycore.
There are several flavours of Linux that simply install off the web with ONE CLICK...the person
does not need to do anything else other than select certain keyboard layouts and such like.
What they end up with is a dual boot computer....Win32 and Debian ....OR.... win32 and Ubuntu
etc
Your win32 installer here is a step in the right direction....people will appreciate it i am sure.

-
Vince,
thanks for the feedback on core2usb. Any feature advice to enhance it?
Regarding WEB, it is mentioned in the FAQ section:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#pendrives (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#pendrives)
Keep in mind it is a new tool and so requires time to get known.
Béla
-
Markus
i tried this tool and it works just fine.
However, my laptop simply does not like the pen drive here....so it doesn't
really find it properly on boot
unpluging and replugging gets it to be found....then PLOP can boot to the pendrive
tinycore version...but tinycore only reaches a command prompt.....no GUI desktop arrives
or X11....
i think it's just the pen drive that is the issue...can try the same pen on a different
machine....(it may work)
hmmmm
Vince.
-
Is it formatted in WINDOWS? What is the partition layout and the capacity of drive? Which ISO installed and with or w/o TCE?
-
Version 1.3 released. New feature:
- Online Tiny Core current version check added.
-
This looks like it is developing into a very nice tool. Maybe it could be mentioned in a more prominent
location on the Tinycore website, such as the installation page, not just the FAQ page.
-
core2usb is a portable application, no WINDOWS installation. It is good to shoreten the time to get a bootable USB and for those just trying Core. However an installable version would give some benefits, like faster startup, easy to find in Windows, etc. for those using it regularly. If there is a demand, I can provide an .msi installer.
Please vote.
-
I voted no, personally when I use widows I always preferred portable versions of any program.
I Consider windows system too inclined to messing up, so I prefer applications that do not come out of their folder
-
Anything which makes it easier to install tinycore is beneficial, but I don't have a strong opinion as to whether it should be installable or not.
It is probably ideal if it can be run without needing to be installed in windows - if you can get full functionality.
With more and more people using netbooks, without a dvd drive, an installer or installers which can be run without a cd or dvd is becoming more important.
There could be more than one installer, to suit people in different situations.
I think, one which can do a full installation, including home and opt directories, would be a big plus.
-
Hi bmarkus
Frankly, I've never been a fan of the way programs get installed on Windows where every program
simply dumps a bunch of stuff in the registry and then not cleaning up if you un-install it. Over time,
the registry winds up looking like a public bathroom that never gets cleaned.
My preference is the way portable programs do it. Create a self contained directory. Add an optional
icon for the desktop for a fixed installation.

just tried 4.4rc1 and noted that core2usb doesn't copy over the cde directory.
-
just tried 4.4rc1 and noted that core2usb doesn't copy over the cde directory.
Please provide details, what happened exactly; which files and directories are on the USB? Did installation finish or it was broken and not finalized? Did you remove USB on the proper way disconnecting it or just pulled out? In later case it may happen the WINDOWS did not write cache back to the stick.
Myself using Core2usb to create 4.4rc1 and 4.3 USB sticks with different USB sticks and works fine in all cases.
-

Oh just one more thing. By default CDE is copied to USB and renamed to TCE. Therefore you do not find CDE directory on the USB stick.

I get a Page that says "We are unable to display the page you requested" when going to the sourceforge project page.

I'd imagine that you could use this direct link (http://sourceforge.net/projects/core2usb/files/core2usb-stable/core2usb-1.4.exe) (for version 1.4) as alternative.
Mind you it seems that the load balancers of sf.net are pretty slow today to work out where to send any of my 'wget' requests.

I don't run microtoss AT ALL. Does this mean I'll be punished for using Mint by you guys not letting us have a usb intaller we can use from a distro, ie the core2usb-1.4 non exe. Or do you want me to install windows 95 or whatever it is these days?
I must add that TC is really toppo, but come on. Must I really do this from the confines of the evil corp'?

:o Amazing Tool Great Useful, thanks bmarkus, i have to say that u make a nice choice for syslinux!
The tool have single interface easy to use.
Well i think implement a system to get latest tinycore version, and install in a selected driver will be like peace of cake for everyone, and let us option to put us remaster core.
:D
Congratulations

Will this work with the new test version of TC 4.5 or only regular versions of TC. I would love to test the new TC on my Dell mini 1012.
Thanks for the app Bmarkus -John

It works with TC 4.x including 4.5

Quick "Q",
I have TC loaded in a VBox and I loaded LXDE and it loads up without me having to choose a DE just after boot, I like it like that. Now running it from a USB drive, LXDE does not load. Any ideas? Is it because it is on a USB drive?
On a side note, TC and Dell mini's do not seem to play well together. I have searched the forums and the wiki but it appears that I will have to go dumpster diving to make it work. :o I am not asking for help with this, just thought you should know. ;D I have a Acer netbook I can use instead. 8)
Great work on the Windows USB app! Worked like a charm, I look forward to testing 4.5 -John
P.S. Did you use Vis_Basic to make the app? If so, you might be able to use the new Gambas 3.1 to port it to Linux for some of the other users. Just a thought..............
-
I'm using LXDE with 4.5rc1 on USB, created with core2usb. First, I installed TC 4.5rc1 on the stick with core2usb, booted on the computer, installed LXDE from the repository than rebooted. It starts LXDE just fine. Make sure that LXDE is configured to start onboot and not just loaded or set ondemand.
core2usb is written in Python, GUI is tc/tk (tkinter)

How about for Mac's, I see that you don't have the code listed on Source Forge. This is OK with me but I thought about porting it to OS X with a little help from some very forgiving friends. ;D
OS X can format Win32 but can't format the Linux 3 or 4 stuff.

I don't have MAC. If someone want to port it, I can give the source code.

One more thing. core2usb is invoking syslinux during installation. Do not know is it exist on Mac or not.

New version, 1.5 is available at https://sourceforge.net/projects/core2usb/ for download. It supports jls_legalize's ISO's and of course works with latest TC 4.6
-
It doesn't install the On Demand files for jls_legalize's ISO. That is one thing i have noticed with your latest version. All i see when i click on the desktop for the pop up menu is the basics, just like the bottom shelf "Toolbar" (Apps Browser, Scm Browser, Control Panel, etc...) and not all the other applications that come with the Enlightenment Desktop Manager that jls_legalize customized in for On Demand.

Hi,
it is good to hear that it works in general (on WINDOWS ?).
You are right, it was not expected to have an ondemand directory in the ISO. Will check latest version.

Yes, i was using Core2USB 1.5 on a laptop running Vista 64BIT. Well, on Unetbootin all of the files copy over just fine, only on your latest version of Core2USB the On Demand files doesn't copy over. Other than that, the On Boot and Optional files copy over just fine.

Try core2usb-1.6 and let me know the result:

Okay, everything is working just fine now with your 1.6 version of Core2USB, thanks.

Re-adding core2usb to my Core17 (https://sites.google.com/site/corenlightenment)
Thanks bmarkus and LinuxUser01

Hi, bmarkus.
Folks in another thread in this forum (TCL on a pendrive to run an Asus EeePC 1000HA?) have suggested I use core2usb.exe to install CorePlus onto my pendrive to run my Asus EeePC 1000HA netbook. I have downloaded core2usb-1.6.exe from sourceforge.net and read the wiki there. I've got a few questions, and I'm hoping this post gets to you and that you will be kind enough to help me out.
-- Is core2usb-1.6.exe still the latest stable version?
-- Will core2usb-1.6.exe work with all CorePlus distros, past and present, including the current one?
-- I have a 4Gb empty pendrive re-formatted FAT32. What do you suggest as partitions before using core2usb-1.6.exe? Or should I leave it one whole partition?
-- I plan to run my netbook from this pendrive and not do a hard disk installation. Are there any special usage details I should know beforehand for the core2usb-1.6.exe installation onto the pendrive? (I am new to TCL.)
Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Cheers!
Mike

Yes. As you see at the project WEB and download area.
Will core2usb-1.6.exe work with all CorePlus distros, past and present, including the current one?
As written in the WiKi, compatible with 4.x Give it a try and let me know if doesn't work.

Create a relatively small FAT or FAT32 partition (256M) as first partition for. Use remaining part as EXT and SWAP LINUX partitions later created with TC when it is up and running.

No. What you need ia a PC which can boot from USB.

When I use Core2USB on a remastered ISO I created with one of the automated scripts... I'm booting directly into an application I created, which works just fine, but when exiting from that application, it boots the TinyCore GUI which I don't want it to do... but if I boot it in a Virtual PC with just the ISO (without using Core2USB) it exits to the command prompt as I expect it to.

hi :)
with Windows XP Pro SP3, I tried core2usb 1.6 with TC current version (x86 4.7.7) but it only made empty directories on my USB stick.
there is an error log file :

File "core2usb-16.py", line 150, in callback1

any idea ? thank you :)

What is locale for XP?
Can you provide a screen capture just before starting installation when all selections made?
-
I had an idea when you asked me to take a screenshot : I moved the iso and the installer to C:\ and it worked ! before, the iso and the installer were in my documents\downloads, maybe the path was too long ?
thank you :)

Looks like there was a special national character in a directory name.
