core2usb - USB installer for Windows
« on: January 01, 2012, 04:34:37 AM »
Specially with release 4.2 3rd party USB installers like Unetbootin or Universal-USB-Installer can't be used as they do not aware TC's special characteristics. Built-in installer requires running TC. If someone is curious enough and can burn a CD, next is installer options, selection right, mode, ... To be honest, my latest tries to install 4.2 on USB with TC's own installer failed.

To overcome these problems and to offer a fast and easy route to get started with (Tiny) Core Linux I wrote a dedicated Windows USB installer, core2usb.

Key features:

- designed exclusively for Tiny Core Linux
- supports TC 4.x series including 4.2
- portable, no Windows installation needed
- safe
- preservs original boot options
- adds WAITUSB=5 boot code automatically
- can create /tce directory on target drive optionally

It comes with a GUI:

For more info and download visit:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/core2usb/

Please note it is a beta test software tested on XP and Vista. There may be bugs, however it is safe to play with, no risk to demage hard disks :) Try it and send me your feedback at SourceForge. Please do not use this forum for core2usb support.

I suggest giving a description of how to use it, and what it can do. For example.

Does it install to FAT32, NTFS or Linux filesystem, or any?

Can it be used to install to a hard drive?

You say "No Windows installation needed." Can it be used without Windows?

Just all of the basic things people may want to know.

You may do this on the sourceforge website if you think that is best.
Many people see what is. Some people see what can be, and make a difference.

Well, my WIKI page with the manual is gone for unknown reason, I will reupload.

However, project description says:

"Windows program to install Tiny Core Linux on USB stick. " Obviosly a WIndowes Program need Windows to run.

In the feature list told :

"- portable, no Windows installation needed"

Do not use modifyid sentence when you are arguing. Google will help you to find out what is a portable Windows application.

To be honest, my latest tries to install 4.2 on USB with TC's own installer failed.

It looks like this will be really useful for people running Windows.   What kind of problems did you run in to with tc-install on 4.2?

Simple, created USB stick didn't boot  ;)

Not a very helpful answer as ...
Not stated which mode USB-HDD or USB-ZIP was used.
Not stated what BIOS options are available on target hardware.
I suspect that your hardware requires USB-FLOPPY which is  partition-less, as that is what unetbootin provides.

Right, but actually I have no more details as I gave up after spending more time with installer as I expected without success. I can retest it and send details however.

Regarding core2usb it is neutral wether TC's installer works or not as it requires a working TC which is not the case for a newcomer installing his or her first TC.

See tc-install test result in a new forum at http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12243.0.html

Keep this thread clean of non core2usb related discussion.

New version, core2usb10beta2 is available for download at SourceForge.

Changes:

- more error mesages and warnings added
- 'Target drive is not empty' warning can be ignored
