Getting webcam to work using v41-dvb-2.6.29.1-tinycore.tcz
« on: December 31, 2009, 03:22:00 PM »
Hello,

I installed v41-dvb-2.6.29.1-tinycore.tcz but my webcam did not turn on. Issuing the command cat /dev/video0 > ~/tst.mpeg produces "No such device". Does that mean my Webcam is not supported? Is there anything I could do to debug and solve the problem? I am on an EEE 901.

Cheers,
Baz

See if there are any related messages in dmesg.

According to http://en.gentoo-wiki.com/wiki/Asus_Eee_PC_901#WebCam
it is an usb one, and should be supported by the uvc driver. This driver is included in the v4l-dvb extension.

I'm not very well versed on how to interpret the dmesg output. I have attached it in case you would like to take a look (must be logged in to see attachment for anyone wondering).

Hm, the dmesg shows it as detected. Is it turned on in the bios?

Just to be sure, are there other /dev/video devices than 0?

I double-checked the bios and it is enabled (good suggestion tho). Also the only "video" in dev is /dev/video and /dev/video0, plus I didn't attach anything else. Can it be started somehow? If not, could I ever shut it down if I ever got it to work?

mplayer -v tv://

What in the world! It worked!! Can you see me? Just kidding. Will it only be *on* if I use it, or is it now always kind'of in the background sucking up juice?

Also is linphone currently the main package to talk and video chat (i.e. use my webcam) in TC?

I don't really know. My Macbook's cam is only on when used, I can tell because it has a red/green light.

You can force it off through a file in /proc/acpi/asus, IIRC.

Re linphone - couldn't tell, I don't do video chat ;)

Curaga, may I ask what you use for VOIP (if you do use VOIP)?

Linpone is there but built without video suppport. You can try Skype. Its video usually works.

It's actually been Mumble for the last year. Not really VOIP as many know it, more like a group call.
