Intel and AMD
« on: May 05, 2021, 09:57:12 AM »
Hello,

Why do Intel and AMD cpu chips run so hot?

is this just bad design?

Even with cooling systems, they are still quite hot indeed.....(not touchable)

ARM cpu chips seem far less prone to this while executing 100 of millions of instructions per
Second also?

Thx

C

Because they were designed so. A 50W chip will put out 50W of heat, no matter if it's Intel or ARM.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Right Curaga,

hmmmm......thanks for your reply.

....perhaps many of the newer models by those brands are much less power hungry.
(Intel & AMD)........chips in general purpose machines (domicile//office devices)

It says ARMv7 chips execute 130 million instructions per second, maxed out, but no power
usage is measured, because it's negligible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It is a versatile processor designed for mobile devices and other low power electronics. The processor architecture is capable of up to 130 MIPS on a typical 0.13 μm process. The ARM7TDMI processor core implements ARM architecture v4T. The processor supports both 32-bit and 16-bit instructions via the ARM and Thumb instruction sets.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

anyhow, i expect researching much more recent Intel chips from say 2020 would quote much more respectable power consumptions

It's all about the intended application. Look at the Intel Atom line for an example of x86/x86_64 CPUs designed for applications similar to many ARM CPU models. Similar to ARM CPUs with comparable performance, some Intel Atom CPUs can be used without a cooling fan.

For PCs, Intel found (around the time of the 486) that lots of people were happy to install a cooling fan in return for increased CPU performance. So for that application (still the main one for x86/x86_64), they're still giving people what they want.

Running a lightweight OS (eg. Tiny Core) and applications on a slower CPU that consumes less power (and therefore make less heat) makes more sense to me, and I do in fact run Tiny Core on an Intel Atom CPU. But I'm obviously a small minority compared with PC users overall.

Yes CNK.

It is true , lightweight platforms  won't over--consume power.

Yes, i think they look into all these topics in server buildings . ( Power consumed //  cooling.)

Thanks.

Hi cast-fish
Why do Intel and AMD cpu chips run so hot?

Why do Ford and Chevy pickup trucks use so much fuel?

The Mitsubishi Mirage consumes far less fuel while still being able to travel at 60 MPH.

Hello  there  Forum  ( Rich)

Oh right.  An anology to vehicles.

There is some sense in that type of approach.

There are so so so many vehicles right......(actually they all contain Lots and lots of computers too)

..........O___o......

THat is a great business ........(but currently semi-conductor global shortage)........Motor Car and vehicle production has been halted for some brands.

many thanks,

C
