Please take a look at the abiword extension
« on: December 26, 2015, 06:18:59 PM »
At first i installed abiword as word processing tool but i had to go back to libreoffice (which is good but a space & memory hog) because of the fact in abiword there were missing the import and export features. Abiword without the possibility to import (& export) at least ms word and office is not really that useful nowadays.

PS. I experimented newly with abiword and i see that there are - probably - the export&import options. But the problem is the save as window does not respect the the screen format (1024x576 in this case here) and it cannot be moved by the standard Alt+LeftMouse button or resized by Alt+RightMouse button. So the format options remain inaccessible.

Using Xvesa at 1366x768, abiword opens a window occupying about a quarter of the display.

The file/open dialogue allows you to choose word format, rft, html, etc, etc.

Hi Juanito! I guess so, but i do not arrive to the ground ;). Is there a way to re-dimensionate the relatives windows (Save as and Open - and may be others as well, i'm not aware of in this moment)? I'm limited to 576 in height ... ;)

...limited to 576 in height .
You will eventually encounter this issue with other software on a netbook, not just Abiword. On my netbook, the best solution is to run openbox and configure it to force display everything full screen without any window dressing, which includes all configuration popups. Not on that system ATM, but i believe the configuration is similar to the example in post #6:  http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2076297.

Experiment, with proper settings these issues will disappear. Netbook screen is too small to slide little windows around anyway, so they may as well all run full screen. You could also trial a tiling window manager, such as DWM, load each application 'monocle' in a seperate tag: http://dwm.suckless.org/.

Another less desirable option is to hold Alt, grab the window anywhere by holding down left click, then slide the rest of the window content into view - pain.

Hi nitram. As a said in my first msg: This technique does not work with the abiword "subwindows": neither A+Left mouse button for moving the window as a hole nor Alt+Right mouse button to resize (which works on all other programs i used up to now in tcl). May be i can play around with the fluxbox key and shortcut settings furthermore ... (will have to see)

Ah, i forgot: The "subwindows" "Save as" or "Open" already are fullscreen without decoration.

Sorry missed that. You didn't try the other two suggestions?

If the sub-window was truly full-screen then you should see the entire window. The openbox config settings mentioned force all windows to full screen/screen resolution, but unless you try it you'll never know. Have been using this for years without issue. All maximized means even application popups, like save as..., are forced to fit, nothing ever off-screen. I personally like Fluxbox better day-to-day but not sure it has this option. The other suggestion, DWM, would only take a few minutes to install and test.

Edit: In the end still think it's a (limited) screen resolution issue, doubt re-compiling Abiword would change anything. The popup is probably programmed to be 600 pizels tall or something, unless you want to take a look at the source code?

Hi nitram. Thanks for your engagement.

I think i found a way: Right clicking on the save as or open item in the panel i get to the fluxbox options, among them maximize. If i do maximize the subwindow opens over all the width (1024 pixels) but leaves a bit in height (i'd estimate it uses about 565 pixels (not using all the 576 pixels of the max resolution).

But unfortunately, Abiword does also weird things like not showing the ruler and it seems to be unable to deal correctly with the x-fonts and their resolution (Libre writer does). I didn't encounter this problems with abiword in slackware. So, i think i'll either have to make my own extension of the latest version of abiword or to use libreoffice writer.

Maybe good enough, right clicking Fluxbox panel and selecting autohide may also provide more screen space.

Briefly installed Abiword a while ago with similar issues. IIRC there was an optional dependency for icons, but it did not fix all issues like the ruler.

If you look at the geometry section in /home/tc/.config/abiword/profile, you can change the size of the abiword window on launch.

Using flwm classic, the ruler appears and disappears when I resize the window from the corner - toggling "view ruler" on/off seems to bring it back again most of the time.

Note that flwm classic makes it easier to work with windows whose size doesn't fit the screen as the title bar is at the side so you can drag the window until the top/bottom show.

Thanks!

Good idea to look into ~/.config/abiword
But in the geometry section there is defined the main window; not the subwindows as <Save as> or <Open>. Their geometrical definition obviously is defined (hard coded?) elsewhere ...

As for the display problems: May be Abiword does not deal correctly with the defined xfont resolution. I think 96x96 is somehow something like a standard (but i'm not sure if it is set somewhere explicitely; maybe i should do that, in .Xdefaults/:Xresources? Or .gtkrc-2.0.mine?).

PS. I vaguely remember, there is a way to define the font size in dpi in relation to the screen size, but i did not find it anymore.

Did you try using flwm classic to be able to move the file/open window?

You can play around with the dpi/screen physical size in xorg.conf in order to fool xorg into making the window size smaller.
