@aus9: I've had lots of problems both with defective (regular-size) SD card readers and the cards themselves. There seem to be a lot of fakes on offer out there. I've found that Class 10 cards are more reliable booters than class 4, and forget about class 2. No read speed differences, just more predictable boot. I finally bought a Transcend USB reader/writer that has been reasonably reliable in terma of producing usable cards, again on the 'big' SD cards. Perhaps you could dd an image to your micro card in the device itself via android? The android terminal apps I looked at were all pretty clumsy, but might work for a wget and dd.
