Do you know of any apps that are similar to "wget" but maybe lightweight more?

How can anything be more "lightweight" than something that is already built into the supplied busybox?

Wget is already pretty basic. Even curl is a step up.

For compatability I use the GNU Wget full version  (in repository) but it's certainly not more lightweight, but works great for me

I can't follow how GNU wget would be more leightweight.
As for compatibility, GNU wget has proven to show incompatibility issues in the past, documented in several posts in this forum.

The question from Reply #2 has remained unanswered so far...
