[SUGGETSION] mydata with different compression types
« on: November 18, 2011, 06:14:00 AM »
In order to speed up the backup on older pcs could  be nice to give the possibility to choose the kind of compression of mydata

I'm suggesting the possibility for the user to choose between different types: tar, tar.bz, tar.gz ..

It would be interesting for someone to do tests for file size and time taken for compression, for different types of files (txt, jpg, etc), and different type of compression, to see where the benefits lie.
Many people see what is. Some people see what can be, and make a difference.

+1 for Guy's testing suggestion.

Also the caveat would be that backup/restore then becomes reliant on having the proper supporting extension.

Also test decompression time.
My opinion is that shutdown time is less important than bootup time.

For me opposit. I'm always in hurry when system turned off.

when Im using my pc at work, I press the power button: instant off (instead of 5minutes).
But I cannot accelerate the booting time: so, speed at boot is more important for me.

I don't have a horse in this race -- I reboot maybe once a week. For me reliability (if it's any different between the various formats) would be more important than shutdown/boot time.
