While I agree that it is really really handy to have a file manager in base, the arguments against it are valid:
*) its just not necessary
*) it would be an open door for feature creep or even, dare I say it, bloat.
*) The choice of a file manager tends to be very subjective with regard to minimum required features
So any file manager that makes it into TC base will likely have to be a very special product indeed.

The size issue, while no biggy for me personally, is a valid concern.  Will TC always stay between ten and eleven MB?  Maybe not.  But every addition to the base should be viewed with a critical eye, with focus on keeping TC lean and simple.  There will always be those who say, "Oh, size doesn't matter"...  ;)

as a new user of tiny core, i was also looking for the file manager.
' oh, where is the file manager'  but when i remember the name
'tiny core' then i tried to understand, because maybe this might bloat
the system just like most of the OS out there  :)
so i fell back to aterm, then for a little
bit of convenience downloaded the tree and later i found that i
can make use of the editor as my file manager if only just to navigate
around the system, saves me a lot of typing on the terminal. i would just
need to type '/' when ever i change directory.
anyway a file manager is really handy, i agree.

I'm a month into using TC which I use daily, and still haven't installed a file manager. I haven't felt the need for it.  Using Aterm has forced me to relearn the CL that I have got away from. I've spent a fair amount of time configuring Aterm so its very usable.  I can find anything I need with 'slocate', and with an updated and aliased .ashrc file, routine typing and file manipulation is quick and easy.  Will I have a file manager?  Probably, but I dont see it anytime soon.  Having too much fun computing with CL

Plus theres always the cool factor when someones looking over my shoulder ... "What the heck are you doing??!"

I really like the lean and mean 'base' of TC .... if I want it then I'll download it. Dont give me stuff that will bloat the underpowered PII300Mhz-256MB RAM laptop I'm using.  TC base runs great on this machine .... :-)

Just offering a pro-Aterm response to a healthy thread ......  ;D
