Hello forum people

Thanks for all your earlier help. It is a great forum.

Is a "frugal install" of TCL just meaning that you convert the contents
of the TCL CD disc over onto a drive. Therefor future booting of TCL
takes place from a drive instead of booting up from the CD disc?

thanks

Vince.

hello,

uh, i am not sure about Frugal. I just wondered what is the benefit
of Frugal install of TCL over booting TCL from a CD disc?

i don't want to get too techical here.

How much  better is a  Frugal install of TCL rather than just booting TCL from CD disc and already having my TCE directory on my hard drive?
(persistence)

without getting too technical

thanks

Vince.

Hi vinceASPECT
The biggest differences are you will boot faster from the hard drive than the CD, and if you enter
any boot codes they can be added automatically when booting from a hard drive.

Hello

ahh, that is useful to know.

I am going to do a Frugal install of TCL to my laptop hard drive. The laptop drive
already has windows XP on it.

I have re-sized the laptop windowsXP partition and with the resulting spare empty
space i put an ex4 partition of 800 megabytes there.

I downloaded TCL 3.7.1 multi-core and burned it to CD disc.

So i simply follow the install intructions from TCL's homepage and the install's TCL........ will it
sort out the bootloaders?......

OR

do i need to follow the specific  TCL hard drive install instructions for a computer
drive that already contains windows?

thanks

Vince.

Hi Vince,

First, let me say that I am a devoted user of Tiny Core Linux. I boot it 99% of the time on my netbook.

But, to do what you want to do, I like to install Puppy Linux first. I have always had good luck in getting it to set up a proper GRUB (which is necessary for multi-boot systems). Once you have GRUB and are able to boot to Windows and Puppy Linux, it is a snap to add in the necessary Tiny Core files and create a GRUB entry for it. Here is a link to my description of how to do that on my EEE 900 netbook:

http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php?topic=3611.0

There may be easier and more direct ways to achieve a frugal install, but that is what worked for me.

Grub is not necessary for multiboot systems.  Any modern boot loader can do that.

OK. I should have said that GRUB (or something similar) is necessary for multi-boot systems.

Hi vinceASPECT
Go to the home page of the TC website. At the top of the page click on Installation and follow the
directions. For the target make sure you select  Existing Partition  NOT  Whole Disk. Since you
already formatted the partition you can select the  No formatting  option.

Hello,

yes. TCL has installed OK to my laptop. TCL works multibooting with windowsXP.

I got lot of help off this forum so thanks.

My laptop keyboard is broke so i could
not install TCL exactly like the TCL homepage instructions. I was not able to
type "tcg" at the boot prompt. Somebody advised me to get into a normal
TCL desktop and Load an install pack then type "tc-install at the "run" prompt.

All of the above has worked correctly.

My next thread on this forum is about "mplayer"

Luckily i have had lots of help from this forum. One thing i have done is keep
a continual back-up of the TCE directory on a spare pen drive. Today i was messing
with TCL and "mplayer" and "smplayer". I have not yet solved these subjects but
tried VLS tool out of interest.

VLC appeared to not like my USB soundcard. It removed the USB sound cards
signal path (mixer) to the TCL operating system. This threw me off course so i deleted
the TCE directory on my frugal install and reverted back to my last Tinycore back up. (TCE)

All is well again. I will continue with this "mplayer" issue and thread.

thanks a lot

Vince.
