boot error msgs in TC 3.7.1
« on: June 30, 2011, 04:23:32 AM »
Hey there. Brandy new to TC distro. (been messing with a few others: SuSE,Mint,Lubuntu,Puppy,Slackware).

I burnt the "live" CD (10.3 MB) regular TC ISO. (from a WinXP laptop).
Booted it up on a P3-1.3 Ghz (Tualatin core), 512MB, 40GB HDD. and got a bunch of boot error messages.
Then...
Booted it up on a P2-333Mhz (Slot 1), 64MB, 17GB HDD. and saw the same set of similar error msgs flash by on that machine as well.

Both of these old dogs run perfectly otherwise: P3 uses Lubuntu, P2 uses Win98.

Figged out how to find the boot log in "dmesg" and copied it to a USB drive.
Thought I might run it by you seasoned users, or a guru floating around who might know what is causing this.
TC seems to boot normally after these msgs appear, but before I really get into configuring the system (I'm just learning how to add meat to this barebones OS...), I want to make sure that these errors won't be a wobbly foundation on which to start. I thought it might be a bad CD burn, but a 2nd CD made no diff.
Checked both disks for errors, both came up clean, and have no dirty bits set.

Any help would be appreciated....

First,
After the "boot:" prompt comes up, I hit enter, then the first message I see (which disappears almost immediately) is:
ACPI Invalid PBLK [length 5]

(the above message occurs on both machines)

Then, the rest of the messages stream by...

The log file was lenghty, so I'm just pasting the messages at the very bottom, which coincide with the ones that flashed by on the screen:

Neither error is serious, nor one you'd need to worry about. The ACPI one says that your ACPI bios is partly invalid, unless it stops shutdown, no need to care. If it does, you could see if there are bios updates available.

The cd error could be our fault, perhaps there's a scan that's not properly skipping the cd.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Thanks man! That was a lightening-quick response!

No shutdowns have occurred, and both BIOSes have been upgraded to the most recent ones available.
So it sounds like I'm good to go.

many appreciations...,
Wulffie.

I meant that it could prevent a normal shutdown, not cause a sudden one :)
