OSRS Launcher on Linux Beta
« on: November 02, 2026, 10:25:11 AM »
Lmk if this is the wrong place to post this.

Has anybody tried to set up the Jagex Launcher on Tiny Core Pure 64?

Background: Recently my main Laptop running windows 11 died, so Ive taken the plunge and am learning Linux on a Dell Inspiron 11 from ~2014. I have Tiny Core Pure 64 installed. (Getting a frugal install with Wifi Supportwas quite the ordeal, but that's a topic for another thread.)

A while back Jagex, the company behind RuneScape 3 (RS3) and Old School RuneScape (OSRS), made a Beta for the Jagex Launcher (and game client) on Linux.

I installed the AppImage, but couldn't get it working, so I unpacked it and tried running the AppRun file and the Jagex-Launcher File.

Both complained about Line 19 of the Launcher File trying to open the Jagex-Launcher.bin file, claiming that it can't be found.

The file path it notes does point to where the .bin file is, and running the .bin file lists a bunch of missing libraries.

So I installed and loaded all the missing libraries and confirmed that the .bin file can see them all.

I went back to try running the AppImage, the RunApp, and the Jagex-Launcher files, but I still get Jagex-Launcher.bin can't be found where it is.

Any Help would be greatly appreciated.

I found some time to puzzle through and this is the process I worked out.

1. Download ' jagex-launcher-beta-linux-x86_64.AppImage ' @ https://osrs.runescape.com/download
2. Give the AppImage executable perms ' chmod +x jagex* '
3. unpack App Image ' jagex* --appimage-extract '
4. In the new folder, verify the following items have executable permissions
   A. AppRun
   B. jagex-launcher
   C. jagex-launcher.bin
5. Install bash.tcz and file.tcz
6. run ' ldd jagex-launcher.bin | grep "not found" ' and note all the missing Libraries.
   A. I was missing the following:
      I. . . . . .   libnspr4.so
      II. . . . .    libnss3.so
      III. . . . .   libnssutil3.so
      IV. . . . .   libsmime3.so
      V. . . . .    libcups.so.2
      VI. . . .    libgtk-3.so.0
      VII. . . .    libudev.so.1
   B. I installed the following:
      I. . . . .     nspr.tcz (libnspr4.so)
      II. . . . .    nss.tcz (libnss3.so, libnssutil3.so, and libsmime3.so)
      III. . . . .   libcups.tcz (libcups.so.2)
      IV. . . . .   gtk3.tcz (libgtk-3.so.0)
      V. . . . .    udev254-lib.tcz (libudev.so.1)
   C. I'm sure somebody more familiar with Linux than I, could get the .so files more directly.
7. 'file ./jagex-launcher.bin' returns that it's expecting a /lib64 directory, but TinyCorePure64 does not have this directory.
   A. Make a backup of the jagex-launcher.bin file
      cp jagex-launcher.bin jagex-launcher.bin.bak
   B. Install patchelf.tcz
   C. change the interpreter path:
      patchelf --set-interpreter /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 ./jagex-launcher.bin
8. You should now be able to open the Jagex Launcher. ./jagex-launcher.bin
   A. The window was bigger than my screen so I had to use (Ctrl + Alt + M) then (Ctrl + Alt + Minus).
   B. Additionally, no text would render for me until I made the window small enough. (edit: I after the text rendered, I could return the window to a bigger size without issue.)
9. You can now uninstall file.tcz and patchelf.tcz. (bash.tcz is needed to run the ./jagex-launcher.bin command.)

I've just got the launcher to open so far.
I'll post an update when I get a chance to actually hop in the game.
Edit: While the Launcher does launch, selecting Log-in on Web fails to launch a webpage, and Log-in on App opens another window, immediately crashes and closes.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Note: you may be missing different libraries than I do. I used the Apps App to find tcz's with the libraries I needed.
1. Open Apps and Select Browse.
2. Change ' Search ' to ' Provides '
3. Type in the exact library you need. eg ' libgtk-3.so.0 '
4. From here I:
   A. Checked if I already had any tcz listed,
   B. Found the Smallest tcz listed,
   C. Checked the ' files ' list for the smallest tcz to see if it covers any others I need. (You could rerun the ldd command on the .bin again between each tcz install.

      patchelf --set-interpreter /lib/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 ./jagex-launcher.bin

That's interesting, I didn't know you could do that.

Nice write-up - the patchelf step is the part that catches most people, since Pure64 has no /lib64 at all.

On the login window dying straight away: that embedded browser usually needs more than nss and nspr. I would check libgbm and libxkbcommon next, and try without the sandbox once.

Amusing timing: a new action title just sold 4 million copies in its first 72 hours with 830k concurrent on Steam, so plenty of people are fighting launchers on Linux right now.

Hi ekaputrigame
... since Pure64 has no /lib64 at all. ...
64 bit web browsers also look for /lib64. Web browser extensions
deal with it in their  /usr/local/tce.installed  file like this:
Code: [Select]
if [ ! -e /lib64 ]
then
        ln -s /lib /lib64
fi

Though the  patchelf  binary does offer several other interesting
options besides just changing the interpreter path.

I am not sure if the following are needed, as I already have other programs that have these on their dependency list.
   A. libxkbcommon.tcz
   B. libEGL.tcz
Thank you ekaputrigame forthe suggestion.

There are 2 Options for logging in once you have the Launcher working:
   A. On App
      I. This seems to cause an immediate crash, I do see a Cloudflare box appear for a moment but nothing populates in the terminal.
   B. On Web
      I. This options fails to open a webpage, but does populate an xdg-open error in the terminal.
II. I didn't have xdg on my system, so I installed xdg-utils.tcz
III. this allowed the Launcher to open a new tab on PaleMoon (My Default Browser), but Palemoon does NOT support CloudFlare natively
         a. If you're committed to using Palemoon, there is a workaround, but I didn't bother with it. (Google "Palemoon can't pass CloudFlare")
IV. I installed brave-browser.tcz (It was the first one to show up on a google search "What Tiny Core Brower supports CloudFlare" for me)
      V. With Brave Installed and Loaded, the Launcher now opens Brave and I can Log in, but the Launcher never recognizes that I've logged in..

At this point I randomly decided to try logging in "On App" again, and it suddenly worked!

I tried uninstalling Brave and rebooting, but then the launcher crashes like before.
So it seems that a Cloudflare solution is needed, whether it's Brave or a workaround on another browser.

for OSRS, I selected my character and hit "Play Now", and nothing happened.
Checking the terminal, it seems to have downloaded RuneLite, which is profoundly disappointing, I really though Jagex would have had the integrity to make their own Linux Client..

The terminal, after installing RuneLite, claims to be "launching runelite for character: MyCharacter" then "Launched RuneLite." but no game client opens.
I tried clicking "Play Now" again, it finds that RuneLIte is already downloaded, and makes the same Launching/Launched Claims again.

This is as far as I'm going to get tonight.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi WorldFamousArtisan
I am not sure if the following are needed, as I already have other programs that have these on their dependency list.
   A. libxkbcommon.tcz
   B. libEGL.tcz ...
As long as those programs are loaded and not only downloaded you're fine.
Run this:
Code: [Select]
ls /usr/local/tce.installed | grep -iE "libxkb|libegl"If  libxkbcommon  and  libEGL  come up, they are installed.
