memory testing - memtest - memtest86 - memtest86+

it was only a matter of time, not if but when, that the memory error monster would rear it's ugly head again.
(only secured several lifetime warrantees during past failures because we saved BOTH the receipts AND the original packaging, as per OEM/retailer/seller/etc)

found 3 different websites with three different offerings...hmmm.
xttps://www.memtest86.com(no)
xttps://memtest86.net(no)
https://memtest.org(ok)

the tl;dr is that after reading https://memtest.org main webpage and appreciating that they were _front_and_center_ with their licensing, they were selected.

Licensing General Public License v2

Memtest86+ is a unified, free, open-source memory testing tool, released under GNU GPL v2.0. The new v6 code base (originally called PCMemTest) was provided by Martin Whitaker, based on Memtest86+ v5, developed by Sam Demeulemeester. Both are now working on Memtest86+.

Memtest86+ is not an edition of Memtest86, which since 2013 has been closed-source `Freemium` software owned by PassMark Software Pty Ltd.

presently using MemTest86+ Version v8.10

also, if anyone knows how to donate to their project please advise!

as always, your preferences and mileage may vary.

sharing is caring.

another post related somewhat to ram/memory/memtest86+

had a Gateway factory motherboard of the vintage that it came with a Q6600 quad core processor

got it used so no idea how bad/good it was treated before we got it, but we never stressed it in any way

after several uneventful years of daily operation it failed(too long ago to remember exactly the failure details/mode/etc)

all the ram was extensively tested in several other machines/motherboards/etc. and all proved out and passed all testing

turns out _something_ on the Gateway factory motherboard had gone bad and it would work fine with ram in two of the slots, but putting a stick in the 3rd and/or 4th slot resulted in the original failed/failure condition

moral of the story is you don't know...until you know.

due-diligence/buyer-beware/operator-be-aware/etc.

as always, your mileage may vary.
