Update instructions, from the release distribution files area:
http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/4.x/x86/release/distribution_files/
1. Copy over new vmlinuz
2. Copy over new core.gz
3. boot into new system

if You have/use X then
AppsAduit -> Dependencies -> Build Reporting Database -> Fetch Missing

or if you only use Core (no X) or Xorg did not start and only have a system prompt use:
tce-audit builddb
tce-audit fetchmissing

Note: Xprogs.tcz has been updated and is now in the repository.

I was having trouble getting the newest version to boot.  My TCE is on a RAID, LUKS, LVM.  I finally realized that it was failing to mount the raid array due to raid-dm-3.0.21-tinycore64.tcz not being present.  It was only then that I realized the kernel version had changed.

I could have sworn I'd tried updating dependencies as you suggested, but I ended up installing raid-dm-3.0.21-tinycore64.tcz while booted into tce=pre.

Anyway, it's almost working now, but there doesn't seem to be an nvidia-module-3.0.21-tinycore64.tcz in the repository.

Out of curiosity...why 3.0.21 instead of 3.0.3 this time?

Thank you for all the effort you all put into Tiny Core.  I love this operating system.

I tried to update to update a flash drive from v4.3 to v4.4 following the instructions.

1. Copy over new vmlinuz
2. Copy over new core.gz
3. boot into new system

When I rebooted, Xorg did not start, so I ran:

tce-audit builddb

It produced the following error message

Building extension database from /etc/sysconfig/tcedir/optional

mv: can't preserve ownership of 'tce.lst' operation not permitted

My video driver is using nVidia in case that makes a difference.

Likely your using a file system that does not support permissions.
Likely in this particular case that it does not matter.

Hi redwolf
The maintainer of the   nvidia-module   extensions is currently serving his country and not due back until mid May.
The kernel was bumped to a higher version due to some problems with 3.0.3.

Thank you and congratulations to the Tinycore Team on another amazing release.

I tried to update today, but the audio turned out to be a bit wonky.

OSS installs OK but complains: depmod: ./kernel.tclocal: No such file or directory.

Is it something I should be concerned about? I am in the midst of exploring a lot of audio in Tinycore,
so I'd like to tune it solidly.

Cheerio,

Hi solorin
I don't know how much I can help with this, so I'll just ask the obvious.
If you enter  ls -l /lib/modules/3.0.21-tinycore
Does it contain the entry  kernel.tclocal->/usr/local/lib/modules/3.0.21-tinycore/kernel
If it does, then the extension may be making a reference to  /lib/modules/3.0.3-tinycore  which no longer exists.

Using 'I' or 'i' in AppBrowser search ImageMagick.tcz, ImageMagick-doc.tcz, ImageMagick-dev.tcz doesn't appear on the hit list, but it is listed w/o filter.

The search data is updated nightly, IIRC.

The search data is updated nightly, IIRC.

ImageMagick is in the repo since 2010 or something like that. Don't think issue is related to the frequency of update but the update itself.

... OSS installs OK but complains: depmod: ./kernel.tclocal: No such file or directory.

Is it something I should be concerned about? ...

The error message is a consequence of the fact that the 'OSS-modules-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz' extension "violates" the convention to have additional kernel modules in "/usr/local/lib/modules/$( uname -r)/kernel" (as it uses "/lib/modules/$( uname -r)/kernel" instead.

Now, 'kernel.tclocal' is a symbolic link in "/lib/modules/$( uname -r)" to "/usr/local/lib/modules/$( uname -r)/kernel". AFAIK this latter directory did exists in the initrd in the past, but this doesn't seem to be the case any more. Therefore the symbolic link points to a non existing directory, which causes the warning message. In my assessment this should not cause any problem, and any "non-violating" extension containing kernel modules will create this missing directory (and hence no further warning message should show up).

I had mentioned this "violation" in an earlier post (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12548.msg68202.html#msg68202), but I would not call it a "hanging offence". Nevertheless of the two obvious options to avoid this error message (i.e "fix" the OSS kernel module extensions, or add the directory again to the initrd) my vote would be for the former as it would be IMHO the "cleaner" way instead of the latter (which has the appeal to be the possibly easier one).
Title: Re: Core v4.4
Post by: curaga on March 19, 2012, 11:46:10 PM
It would mean having to modify the scripts and possibly apps, and keep up those modifications for new OSS versions. Not something I would like to carry just for moving the module directory.

AppsAudit / OnBoot / Maintenance sort order is case sensitive while AppsAudit /Dependencies and AppBrowser are not. Causing some extra work to find ImageMagick, LXDE, etc. :)

BTW, I'm not a native English speaker; why 's' is in AppsAudit and not in AppBrowser?

Haha, good question. I guess it is because one is auditing all one's applications (plural) but one is browsing for an application (singular).

AppsAudit OnBoot, OnDemand, and Md5Check master list is now consistent with that of Dependencies and AppBrowser, i.e., case insensitive.

Yes. Both label and uuid. Label is easier to use than uuid.

Hi Roberts,
Thanks for your reply,

One more question is there a iso of x86_64 version?
I only found here : http://distro.ibiblio.org/pub/linux/distributions/tinycorelinux/4.x/x86/release/distribution_files/

Thanks,

There is no iso for 64 version as no minimal X setup available as for TinyCore & CorePlus. You need full Xorg. Also there is no 64 based repo.

dear roberts
upgrades cycle of tinycore releases took frantic pace
but faq and wiki doesn't have time to update behind it
questions like how to use iso bootcode (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12855.msg70507.html#msg70507) will appear periodically
until add to faq the iso bootcode item (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes) and section with this manual (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12786.msg69982.html#msg69982)
until add tags feature explain to wiki .tcz.info example (http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:creating_extensions#tczinfo_example)
will occur errors like no tags records in some info-files (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12869.0.html)
do you plan documentation updates on the website?

I will take time over the next few days to review and update the faq.

Hi,

The 4.4 release doesn't work for me. X refuses to start and complains for a missing  /etc/sysconfig/xsession => Back to 4.3

My boot from Tiny Core System Stats :

BOOT_IMAGE=/tce/boot/vmlinuz
quiet
console=tty12
logo.nologo
tce=sda5
home=sda7
restore=sda7
nozswap
nodhcp
lang=fr
kmap=fr
host=HOC
settime
tz=GMT+2
laptop

My onboot.lst :

cifs-utils.tcz
Xlibs.tcz
Xprogs.tcz
OSS.tcz
kmaps.tcz
flash11.tcz
getlocale.tcz
filesystems-3.0.3-tinycore.tcz
Xorg-7.5-3d.tcz
compiz-base.tcz
wbar.tcz

Another strange thing I've noticed in the "installed" tab of Tiny Core System Stats is the presence of a Xorg-7.6.lib whereas I've specified Xorg-7.5-3d.tcz in onboot.lst. But it works well, so I can't complain ;-)

Xorg-7.5
Xorg-7.5-3d
Xorg-7.5-bin
Xorg-7.6-lib

It's my first post and I want to thank all the developers of TC for their work. It's really a different GNU/ linux distribution with LOTS of simple and good ideas (I love Tiny core System Stats). Haven't seen such clever thing since the Thinstation project.

did you install it with tc installer? afaik that file is generated from desktop= parameter.

try installing e.g. fluxbox and adding desktop=fluxbox to boot parameters and see if that works.

I seem to be having update issues as well. I was running 4.4RC2 and upgraded to 4.4 using the copy vmlinuz and core.gz method.

Like others it just booted to command line. I ran the Appsaudit steps which seemed to only load some dev file for the compile module
I downloaded the Xprogs module and then it would boot into the windows manager.

However, whereas with 4.4RC2 my boot disk would come up as /mnt/sdb1/ it now comes up as /mnt/sdc1/ which is a real problem because it has broken all the configurations for my installed programs.

What seems to be different with RC2 and the final is that the boot disk seems to mount really late in the final. So before installing Xprogs I would hit the command line but then the console message would come up with the boot drive being recognized.

Dunno if this explains anything.

I can rework all my script and update my configuration files but I am worries that the boot behaviour might change again.

Hi b1ackmai1er
You can make your scripts mountpoint agnostic:
Code: [Select]
tc@box:~$ blkid /dev/sda2
/dev/sda2: UUID="cf1bbc2f-abba-4032-8609-1d3789d269fe" TYPE="swap"
tc@box:~$ blkid -U cf1bbc2f-abba-4032-8609-1d3789d269fe | cut -c6-
sda2
tc@box:~$
In this example you would add the following to the beginning of your script:
Code: [Select]
MyDrive=`blkid -U cf1bbc2f-abba-4032-8609-1d3789d269fe | cut -c6-`and replace all references to  sda2  with  $MyDrive.

I can confirm core64 v4.4 works fine  :)

The combination of new kernel version/new alsa version still doesn't seem to make my Cirrus Logic CS4206/Intel CougarPoint HDMI sound hardware work without intervention from HDA Analyzer though  :(

Edit: ..but, whereas I needed to patch the 3.0.3 kernel btusb module to work with my "Broadcom Corp. BCM2046B1 USB 2.0 Hub (part of BCM2046 Bluetooth)" hardware, things work fine "as-is" with the new kernel  :)

Today I tried to upgrade core 4.2 -> 4.3 but the result was not positive.
First i update dependency, after i update package and after i fetch missing dependency, I replaced the following core.gz and vmlinux and restart.
At reboot xorg not run, during run of pack this package is missing ;
graphics-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
v4l-dvb-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
wireless-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
(de facto making me impossible to even connect, i have only wireless connection).

Fortunately I never do an upgrade without backing up the partition of Core
I put old vmlinux and Core.gz and I restarted, for now the hybrid goes on (new xlibs Xprogs is overlapped).

I try new search of missing dependecies after a new dep update: only elfutils-lib for prelink and wine.
Code: [Select]
tc@box:~$ tce-audit fetchmissing
Downloading: elfutils-lib.tcz
elfutils-lib.tcz: OK

I try to search manually mi actual possession of module:

Code: [Select]
tc@box:~$ find /mnt/sdb1/tce/optional/ -iname "*3.0.3*"
/mnt/sdb1/tce/optional/OSS-modules-3.0.3-tinycore.tcz.md5.txt

/mnt/sdb1/tce/optional/alsa-modules-3.0.3-tinycore.tcz.dep

/mnt/sdb1/tce/optional/linux-headers-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
/mnt/sdb1/tce/optional/linux-headers-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz.md5.txt

now I download the rest of missing module by hand, but it seems right to communicate on the forum to expose the issues to those who know more than me

I figured the problem, I had to reboot the machine before to update modules for the reason that it use a variable for the version of the "kernel" in the package name.

in the steps listed by robert the order is right but it was too implied that I would understand.

However I could not install wireless packages after restarting (i do not having other way to connect), I was obliged to do so first, consider this for the next (kernel) update!

another problem, I think derived from the lack of virtualbox module: the fetchmissing has not downloaded Input-tablet-touchscreen and pci-hotplug. it has stopped at error of virtualbox:
Code: [Select]
tc@box:~$ tce-audit fetchmissing
Downloading: OSS-modules-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
OSS-modules-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz: OK
Downloading: bluetooth-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
bluetooth-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz: OK
Downloading: firewire-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
firewire-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz: OK
Downloading: virtualbox-ose-modules-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
Error on virtualbox-ose-modules-3.0.21-tinycore.tcz
tc@box:~$

at the end, after several builddb, I was forced to download them by hand.
Title: Re: Core v4.4
Post by: vinnie on March 31, 2012, 01:16:33 PM
another reason could be that in my case the modules are not required by any other package, I belive this is more probable.
Title: Re: Core v4.4
Post by: roberts on March 31, 2012, 01:46:53 PM
If wireless is the only network then you would ONLY have to pre-download any 3.0.21 wireless modules for the posted procedure to work. You have to be booted from the new kernel in order for the other new 3.0.21 files to be updated by AppsAudit. Doing it backwards AppsAudit would not know that a new kernel was about to be installed!

BTW, I'm not a native English speaker; why 's' is in AppsAudit and not in AppBrowser?
We soon won't have this to concern ourselves anymore!  ;)

Hi roberts
OK, looking forward to see what you've come up with.

TCE 4.5 has no more dependancies, it is straight compatible with the AppImage format and boots up with compiz in 3 seconds on an intel 80486DX2 processor.

The name of the release is... wait for it...

I bet on a unified package manager (named "the final super ultra mythical packager", without 's' problems).
Obviously it will depend on compiz.  ;D

http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php?topic=5640.0 - compiz is old stuff, we had that for 3.0 ;)

uhm, I'm going to replace the 4.4 with the 3.0, lol

TCE 4.5 is bundled in a single file named G.O.D ( Grand Only Dependency )

G.O.D is always up-to-date
G.O.D has no known bugs, past bugs or forecoming bugs
G.O.D is localized in any language on earth, may they was, are, or will be in use
G.O.D contains all the applications that was, are, or will be needed.
G.O.D can only be hacked by Chuck Norris and Richard Stallman.

 ;D

Ahem and last thing : G.O.D fits entirely on the Master Boot Record.

Is the config file for busybox 1.19.4 and the patches that were applied available somewhere?
Thanks, David.

upgrades cycle of tinycore releases took frantic pace
but faq and wiki doesn't have time to update behind it
questions like how to use iso bootcode (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12855.msg70507.html#msg70507) will appear periodically
until add to faq the iso bootcode item (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes) and section with this manual (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12786.msg69982.html#msg69982)
until add tags feature explain to wiki .tcz.info example (http://wiki.tinycorelinux.net/wiki:creating_extensions#tczinfo_example)
will occur errors like no tags records in some info-files (http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,12869.0.html)
do you plan documentation updates on the website?

I will take time over the next few days to review and update the faq.

Dear Robert.

thanks a lot for all you've done for TinyCore and I understand that it is difficult to stay in pace with the documentation ...

I was not able to find any hint to boot option iso in the FAQs (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes))...

See http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#iso

thanks a lot, very good.

If you just add it also to the list of boot options (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes (http://distro.ibiblio.org/tinycorelinux/faq.html#bootcodes)) it will be perfect ...
