Installation tutorial?

I would really like to try out Tiny Core 3.6. Although i am not a complete noob when using the command line i don't think i am up to it either. I have a spare (clean) hard drive that's not doing anything at the moment so i would like to install Tiny Core 3.6 on that. But could anyone point me to a tutorial that covers the installation please?

3.6 has a complete GUI installation. No need to use a command line.
You say you have a spare clean hard drive, so what damage could you do?
What? Next we have to have a video before one will attempt to even use the GUI?

I  have to say that those wiki pages  refer to using 3.7 features in non 3.7 releases, e.g., install.gz

The OP has 3.6 and 3.6 has a GUI installer!

The referenced wiki pges refers  the user to use sudo and mkdir from the command line. That should not be!

Why is documentation trying to support old releases? If such is the case then why advance features in the distro, if such is constantly ignored, and document are still going back to the command line?

Afterall, it is only a 10MB download to get the latest release!

It was not long ago that these pages did not exist.

The methods described work.

We are in transition. Using 3.6 you can install tinycore one way. Yet install.gz and grub4dos.gz have been released, creating other options. People installing 3.7 need the new options. The aim is to make it as simple as possible, yet cover both options, which makes it more confusing.

These pages have not been updated since the release of the multicore.iso. That is another option to add.

Once we have passed the major changes, installation guides should get simpler.


For a long time, a lot of the tinycore documentation was several versions behind. There are probably some pages still based on older versions.

When a new version is released, there may not be time to update the documentation immediately. There are several pages which need updating.

One of the reasons for including 3.7 options, is so that when the 3.7 final is released, there is already documentation covering it.

As I have mentioned before, I would like to see installation get even easier, by including a file manager and gparted in the multicore.iso. That way we would not need to tell people to use parted magic to install tinycore.

That would simplify installation, and simplify the documentation.

The new TC3.7RC3 does not have the HD/USB installer within the control panel as indicated in the video?  neither could I find it in any menu.

I downloaded multicore_3.7rc3.iso from here

I was curious and had an opportunity to do a fresh reinstall  but had to go digging through the file system to find the install.gz to run.

From the boot menu of TC3.7RC3 I could not find the most desirable choice which for me would have been "TC Install with grub4Dos, WiFi and firmware tools"  but that's just me, instead I hit enter and added the needed components later. 

After finding and running the install routine I think it would have been better to allow the user to choose which partition to install too instead of arbitrarily installing to the first partition of the drive which in this case was not suitable.  In the end I found the installer had changed the partitions structure and was definitely n longer bootable so I had to do the install over.

Give me a break! Documentation is not/never provided for each release candidate!
It has been discussed repeatedly, the decision to remove the installer from the base.
It is also true, that the installer is the same with no real change in procedure or function from v3.6 which the video covers. Many have used this installer without issue.

Didn't really think anyone would use 3.6 when informed that new tools to help the install are included in 3.7 is all.  


So I'll use 3.6 again, then add the starter packs.

I remember now why I chose 3.7x again;   after downloaded tinycore_current  which I believe is 3.6, verified the MD5 and burned it to a disk.   Booted it, selected HD/USB Install and am presented with an error box which says

"tc-install requires syslinux extension to be loaded.  HDD (vfat) & Zip installs require dosfstools.  Zipwill also require perl"

I guess the install requires an internet connection also.   ok back to the wiki

Instrutions for multcore_3.7.iso
At boot prompt type

tci

When it boots to X windows, click the Run icon, type tc-install
You will see the installation program as per the video. No network required.
