[SOLVED] - CHOWN -Operation not permitted issue
« on: March 28, 2009, 10:14:53 PM »
I have a Memorex 256 Meg USB Memory stick and have downloaded several *.tecm
applications like ndiswrapper, gparted, nano, alsa, etc.  One of the downloads also
has a dependency of ttf-bitstream-versa.

The problem I am seeing is when I boot, I use the cheatcode of tce=sda1, and my
/tec/options folder has all the previously named files.  During the search of all the
options when ttf-bitstream-versa is displayed I get an ERROR message stating
CHOWN: /mnt/sda1/tce: Operation not permitted, then booting continues.

How do I get rid of, or prevent the error message?

Thanks.

That message probably happens due to the partition not supporting permissions, i.e. FAT.

If you really want to avoid it, you could set the kernel loglevel to suppress these errors, or remove the line in your own remaster.

You could also repartition the device, say with two partitions, first fat32 for occasional windows needs and the second, inaccessible by windows, ext2 for TC. Or just format the whole stick to ext2.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.
