I changed the theme and now have a search box, but I'm clearly not supposed to, since if I try to use it it tells me "You are not allowed to search for posts in this forum."

The lack of search means people looking for answers are going to start posting lots of duplicate threads, but if that's what the moderators are after I'm glad to oblige.

[EDIT] Or I could read the other thread about the missing search function and see that there is a legitimate reason for it.  Nevermind! [/EDIT]

But the button is there. It was the original question

It was removed for all but administrators and even then time restricted, As I stated before our account was disabled immediately after the Bluehost move. It would appear that we are out growing our welcome with this provider. A search has begun for alternate hosting that can accommodate our needs. I would appreciate an explanation why disabling was necessary. I'm running an SMF Forum since cca. 2005 with 1100 registered users at the moment and nearly same load without any problems.

Actually it is hosted at Godaddy for less the 10 bucks a month. I'm satisfied with them.

I cannot answer your question. We, the team, were literally shocked and very dismayed by the actions taken against us. We are using their recommended forum software. Their action, take down and require negotiation to be turned back on, or leave. We had two choices, removed all of our stuff and immediately leave, they gave us 10 days to remove everything, or accept the removal/restriction of search. Our course we cannot immediately leave. Not happy, especially with how things have been going so far in 2011. Ibiblio's moved impacted our operations from 11 Jan to 15 March, followed immediately by Bluehost scheduled move, downtime, followed by their take down of site tinycorelinux. The extra stress on me is taking its toll. Now to find someplace were we will be welcomed is another extra burden.

Thanks for the background. Hard to understand why a service provider is behaving on this way on a really competitive market especially without communication and explaining why such action is necessary. If there is a good reason you can always discuss it with your client and find a solution jointly.

I moved my SMF several times to new machine, new provider including to my home server as a temporary solution. It is fast and safe, you can do that from scratch in few hours. The only issue is which can cause problem at the beginning that you have to edit manually few directory entries manually regarding templates, but otherwise it is straight and easy to manage. During moves I have never lost data and I have still posts from 2003 when I used Invisible before SMF

The best is to make immediate backup of the SQL database and files before provider restricts access to be on the safe side and do it one or two times a day before moving. If you have access to tinycorelinux.com DNS control, it is an easy and risk-free job.

SMF need just a typical LAMP environment, no any special toy. Technically you can run it anywhere.
