I can't set screen to 1920x1080!
« on: February 05, 2011, 02:27:51 PM »
hi!
I have a notebook Sony Vaio F Series with 1920x1080 native screen resolution and I'm not able to set the screen to that resolution.
I tried with Xorg, but didn't work...
any ideas?

In general with Xorg, you need to have the proper driver installed to get the best support for you hardware.  If Xorg does not find a configuration file (it's starting in "confless" mode), it will try to assess your hardware and use the "best" driver it has installed.  But if a suitable driver for your Vaio is not included in the basic Xorg package (e.g. xorg-7.5.tcz), then it would probably fall back to VESA or VGA drivers.  The VESA driver may or may not be able to support your resolution.  The VGA version won't.

Did you try to configure Xorg?  Like this: exit to prompt  (via the Shutdown app in TC), get a root console (sudo su), and then enter:
     Xorg -configure

Or if you already did this, or can't do this for some reason, at least start in Xorg again and post your log file ( /var/log/Xorg.0.log or similar) here.  Maybe someone will be able to make more specific suggestions.

Would help to know the graphics card model...
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

ok, It was an onboot.lst problem!, It works fine now on my Vaio, but it doesn't on my netbook Asus EeePC 1000HE; it doesn't run the Desktop.

For an ASUS eeePC 1000, I used xvesa (not Xorg) and the 915resolution extension.  Worked pretty well!  But that machine died after a LOT of use.  :'(
