ALSA problems
« on: November 17, 2010, 11:59:22 AM »
Hi.

I've installed these extensions, through the app browser:

alsa.tcz
alsamixergui.tcz

When I go to run the command 'sudo alsaconf' everything starts up fine.

It detects my card. I select from the options. I confirm the adding of the entry to the 'modprobe.conf'.

But...when it comes time to play a sound, nothing...

I typed in the 'amixer' command after the configuration finishes, and get this:

Code: [Select]
amixer: Amixer attach default error: No such file or directory
When I run the 'alsamixergui' command, this is what I get:

Code: [Select]
alsamixer: function snd_ctl_open failed for default: No such file or directory

The OSS extension works just fine, but I can't figure out the ALSA issues. Any ideas?

I've followed all the applicable steps from the wiki article, with no change in my problem.

I've noticed now that there is some type of firmware load failure during boot.

1. Is there any way to copy/capture the text from the boot screen?

2. Would that boot message help in determining what's wrong?

3. Assuming I'm working from an older PC, which is faster (better performance, with less resources) -> Alsa or OSS?

Sometimes it is helpful to boot with showapps and pause

You can use control panel System Stats dmesg tab, scroll down and use mouse copy to paste results here.

It's a religious issue really. I feel OSS is the lighter one, though.

LOL. Still a matter of contention then...with infighting between different denominations of the OSS, and Alsa based origins of sound.  :-X

I feel like a total jack@$$ after re-reading the FAQ. I noticed something that I didn't notice applied before.

There's a extension with a collection of various firmware available, ie -> 'firmware.tcz'.

I'll try not to post anymore redundant question, without quite a bit of reading through the site.

On a side note though, does loading the firmware extension reduce my total amount of RAM, or is it simply extracted somewhere on the HDD during boot? Can I make it a permanent part of a HDD install, without loading any other unused sound card firmwares?

In the default mode (mount), an extension takes a very small amount of ram, independent of the extension size.
