dwm
« on: October 10, 2010, 07:17:21 PM »
I am trying to use dwm with tiny core 3.  I downloaded dwm sprinkles and installed it.  In my syslinux.cfg file i added desktop=dwm.  The problem is that when it boots it is half dwm and half the old look.  It still has the icon bar on the bottom.  It has an x for the mouse.  The terminals are black with green text.

If you are going to use alternate window managers, you might be better off with microcore instead of tinycore.

The "icon bar on the bottom" (i.e. 'wbar') will not be started if you use boot code 'noicons'.

It still has the icon bar on the bottom.

As expected, as wbar is not dependent on wm.
Perhaps the naming of the parameter 'desktop=' might be slighly confusing as it refers rather to wm, if I understand correctly.

I'm liking TC just fine but all its "supported" window managers are blot.. so I'm trying to get dwm working also.. Will post back if I have any success.

blot
you mean bloat...

For reason of comparison, I downloaded the dwm package for debian sid i386, unpacked it and then squashed it to get an indication of size it would take up as a TC extension, result is 28Kb.

flwm which is the default wm is 32Kb in size, 1 4Kb block more than an estimated dwm extension, but still 7x bigger than the smallest wm available in repo   ;)

I'll take a shot at creating a sprinkles extension just for fun. Here is info on the other 16 window managers in the 3.x repository:

4K    tinywm.tcz
16K   evilwm.tcz
16K   windowlab.tcz
28K   aewm++.tcz
28K   flwm.tcz
66K   jwm.tcz
147K  i3.tcz
205K  openbox.tcz
260K  wmii.tcz
352K  xfwm4.tcz
428K  icewm.tcz
785K  fluxbox.tcz
1.0M  hackedbox.tcz
1.0M  metacity.tcz
1.66M wmaker.tcz
1.7M  compiz.tcz

Personally, I use evilwm because it is very small yet has all the features I need.

Comparison of wm sizes including dependencies could lead to a quite different impression, for example:

0.73M   hackedbox.tcz
1.13M   fluxbox.tcz
1.91M   wmaker.tcz
4.29M   icewm.tcz
7.95M   openbox.tcz
10.82M xfwm4.tcz
11.73M metacity.tcz
24.46M compiz.tcz

I wonder where e17 stands.
