I'm not familiar with pulse, should the deps there be similar to alsa?
ie only depend on libpulse, as not to run the daemon for those who don't want it?

If this was done only to satisfy deps with no intention to use pulse, I'd say yes.

If the intention was to use pulse without the daemon, I'm not sure - I'll try to play around with this in a week or so.

Pulse was a must have compile time dependency :( I will check later is it really need bust gess so. Maybe can be removed from the runtime depth, must be checked.
