To change fonts, you can add something like this to ~/.gtkrc-1.2-gnome2:

{
      fontset = "-adobe-helvetica-medium-r-normal--12-*-*-*-*-*-*-*"
}
widget_class "*" style "user-font"

Note that this will not work with flwm, but does work, for example, with jwm
