MeeGo
s3704ssv:
Hello to All,
I have tried MeeGo and I see its boot speed pretty impressive!
Test Hardware:
Acer Aspire One ZG5: [with the slow 8Gb SSD], 1.5Gb RAM
MeeGo Directly Installed on SSD
16sec~19sec -- from pressing the power button to a usable desktop
Tinycore 2.11 on USB [ext2 formatted][directed bios to boot to usb first] with these modules loaded on boot/startup: hwmon, graphics and 915resolution
24sec~28sec -- from pressing the power button to a usable desktop
I'm wondering what they are using to achieve it.
Can Tinycore [let's say with a little eye candy stuff] break its boot speed as indicated above with MeeGo?
I would like to hear Opinions! :)
and please note: I'm a noob :) limited linux knowledge :)

Not a fair test considering the different devices & buses. USB is way slower and more cpu intensive than SATA, same for the stick vs ssd. You could see what TC does on the ssd ;)
Other main differences: MeeGo's fully optimized for the Atom, even as much as not to run on any AMD cpu. They also start X earlier in the boot process, with a partially Windows-like result (when desktop shows up, it might not yet be usable; though this isn't as bad). Probably some small speed changes in kernel & X.
MeeGo also defaults to btrfs IIRC.

darn!..., I'm bad at comparing that I think :(
anyways...
ok..., to make it a bit fairer..., I'll install TC on the SSD as per your suggestion :)

When you see the desktop..., you can actually use it asap!, no more wait!

Which I found out to my disgust only AFTER the 800mB download... seriously... it looked well worth spending a few hours experimenting with...
ali:
can't it work normally on a non atom? why shouldn't it?
