skype errors bis

I'm trying to use skype beta 2.0.1.81 and cannot get a microphone to work. I have:

..and while the test call sound plays back perfectly using either the usb headset or the Intel 82801DB-ICH4 and the microphone of both works with other apps, there seems to be no way to get either microphone to work with skype.

Any ideas? Did anybody else get it to work?

'took a while, but I just needed to boot with the usb headset plugged in - now skype (and the video from the other end) work fine - and all this on a 7-year old laptop
