anyone know the secret?  If one app is accessing, /dev/dsp is busy for other apps.

Guess you are using ALSA. Did you try OSS?

I have OSS installed.  How will I know if I'm running it rather than alsa?

You could try "osstest" and if you haven't loaded the alsa extensions, then alsa is not installed.
