Problem with TC2.9-RC2
« on: February 09, 2010, 02:46:53 PM »
My apologies if this is a duplicate, but I could not find a thread on this topic.

I am attempting to move from TC29RC1 to TC29RC2. As far as I can tell, everything is working properly on RC1.

I have made no changes in my tce directory or mydata.tgz. However, when I boot (frugal install) with RC2 the following happens:

Numerous segfaults with error 4 in Busybox

Error using alsactl in my bootlocal.sh file. Loadstate 1608 No soundcards found

TC then comes up apparently OK but ...

Wireless is dead.
When I run "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up", terminal hangs and shortly there after the entire system hangs. Must manually power off to recover.

Before attempting wireless activity, browsers seem to work OK accessing the net via wired connection.

Appsaudit says I am up to date on extensions except for not using firefox 3.6.

Probably I missed something in the notes regarding RC2 but have not been able to find it.

I'm stuck. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks and best regards,

sci_fi

Could you pastebin your dmesg?

Re busybox segfault, can you isolate which applet does that?

Are you using the latest alsa, there were some issues with that and udev.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Hi Curaga,

Thanks for the help.

The busybody segfaults seem to occur during "rebuildfstab". See in dmesg below.

I have double checked regarding alsa. Appsaudit thinks I have the latest.

Dmesg output follows: It is two big for a single post. I will post a second reply with the secon half.

OK, I don't see any alsa modules loaded, or any wireless errors.

Let's try to catch the segfault first. If you run "sudo rebuildfstab" in a terminal, any output?

Then the wireless crash. Boot with "debug text", run "sudo ifconfig wlan0 up" in the terminal, and see if there's any output.

PS: It's recommended to boot "base norestore", to be fully in ram, and run e2fsck on the unmounted partition after a crash.

Hi Curaga,

After RC2 booting base and text

"sudo bebuildfstab"
Returns to prompt immediately with no messages

"sudo ifconfig wlan0 up"

Requests  iwl-wifi-3945-2.ucode  Fails with error -2

Then requests iwl-wifi-3945-1.ucode Fails with error -2

Command then returns siocsifflags: no such file or directorh

I double checked: iwl-wifi-3945-2.ucode is present in /lib/firmware. I note that the file is color coded green, which I believe means executable. Different from other .fw modules, however. I successfully used wireless yesterday with the same mydata.tgz file with RC1.

While waiting for your thoughts, I will copy a fresh copy of the firmware files into /lib/firmware and try again.

Scratching my head at this point.

Thanks

Ah, firmware. I was afraid it would be like that; none of us had any devices requiring firmware to test that.

Yes, clearly there is an issue regarding finding required firmware in going from RC1 to RC2. Perhaps the root cause of this symptom also caused the seg faults, etc.

I note that others are having segfault issues:

Resolving this is well beyond my level of expertise. However, if I can do anything to facilitate sorting it out, please let me known.

Thank you again for the quick response and help.

Thanks for your help, the firmware issue is now resolved and should work fine in the later rc's.

Hello,
I'm trying to get the Wifi working on my laptop (Dell Latitude E4200), but I also have the same problem:
I installed different combination of extensions, but whatever I try, it doesn't work.
The card is an Intel WiFi Link 5100 AGN
TinyCore is v 2.10

ifconfig -a  "sees" the interface wlan0, but when I try :
sudo ifconfig wlan0 up
I get the following error message :
ifconfig SIOCGLIFFLAGS : no such file or directory

Currently, I only have the following extensions installed :
firmware-iwlwifi.tgz
wireless-2.6.29.1-tinycore.tcz

Anyone experienced the same thing or managed to have it working with an Intel 5100 ?

Thanks in advance

dondamiano

firmware-iwlwifi does not contain 5100 ucode

those listed here included only
http://intellinuxwireless.org/?n=Downloads

Edit: iwlwifi-5000 supports 5100 i think wrong alarm :)
