Installation Guide need update
« on: January 29, 2010, 01:31:43 AM »
Installation section http://www.tinycorelinux.com/install.html shows an old version of appbrowser:

Also there are .tczl extensions shown in the list.

This step seems to be unnecessary:

Prepare file for backup & restore

touch /mnt/hda1/tce/mydata.tgz

Many users, who are using older versions of TCL on their older h/w - may still need the old Install Guide.
So may be there should be version-wise Install Guide - at least for some time more to accomodate users of older h/w ?

There are no difference in h/w requirement when you are using different TC/MC 2.x versions, while TC/MC 1.x is not supported.

Basically the install guide works for 2.8, 2.7, 2.6, .... But if in general only the latest version is supported, why to keep old docs and duplicate guides when the project is short on resources?

Just private notes...

Hmm, may be ! I think just some days before, there was some discusion from old laptop users abt increased RAM requirements in recent TCL versions. And I think with more newer Kernel releases with more RAM usage, these old laptop users may not be able to use recent versions of TCL. :)

Kernel is the same over all TC 2.x releases.

I found that thread by searching for mydata.gz. I tried to install the actual TC on an Acer Travelmate 220. I think that laptop is about 20 years old. I got it in the meantime after half a dozen trials with new formating the disk. The problem:
If  I installed any additional program (i. e. kmap.tcz) I got the message, that a backup is impossible (or a kind like that) and I end in the command line after a restart.

I found that the file prepared by "touch /mnt/hda1/tce/mydata.gz" is not such, but it is a directory!!! I tried that 4 times and it reproduces. Dont ask me why - I do not know. I got TC running as I deletes the directory mydata.gz and did nothing more. In this case the setup and restart was successful. All that is abit misterious and after about a douzend different trials and about 5 hours I dont like to repeat that again! So I ask you to check this strange thing yourself. I tried touch with other parameters and found it working as expexted. May be tehre is another source for that problem?

Now TC runs like a charm with LYX, firefox and some compilers and I am very satisfied with my  experiments- My first impression is absolutely positive.

Regards BB

PS: Ok, if you really need some more details to fix this "bug" (? eventualy) I am willing to deliver details by doing some more new installations.
