TC 2.8 Impressions
« on: January 24, 2010, 05:56:49 PM »
Just got TinyCore Linux 2.8 installed and running my normal assortment of apps (Firefox, XFE, Geany).  I got from grub screen to flwm "desktop" in about 16 seconds on my old-ish P4 latptop!  No problems so far.  Nice work Robert and the rest of the TinyCore Team!

I have been using 2.8 from USB during the weekend mainly with WICD, LXDE, Xorg and Firefox. Works smoothly, no any issue experienced.

Maybe a minor issue: no automatic screen blanking?  In earlier TC versions, after no activity, my screen would automatically go black, as a basic "screen-saver."  But in TC 2.8, it does not.  Any idea why?  I prefer having it go black after inactivity.

Screen blanks fine for me with base system.  Are you running an alternate X server?

Screen still blanks on my laptop.

I somehow manage to lose all my .dep files when moving to 2.8 so extensions weren't loading dependencies, but other than that, smooth upgrade, much improved management of what's running when.

robert:  No, I'm using the base X server.  I am using the 'laptop' boot parameter, if that makes a difference. I'll see if screen blanking starts working again after my next reboot (I'm away from that laptop right now).

I had to re-install OSS and wireless_tools for 2.8, but no major issues with my .tcz files.  I should probably run an update on all of them.

Wasn't laptop boot option deprecated 3-4 versions ago?

I could not post to the release notification thread any more, hence I'm adding this here now:

(Without wanting to "pick on someone", since I really appreciate the effort of all people involved) The file /opt/.tcrc is still part of the TC 2.8 initrd. I have not checked MC 2.8, but I guess it's simple to remove it in the future.

Auto screen blanking works as before.  Not sure why it did not work last time I booted TC 2.8 but it seems to work as expected now.  Sorry to raise a flag prematurely. :-\
