Can't get Flash or VLC to work
« on: November 15, 2009, 03:42:14 PM »
Hi All,
I have 8 different Linux distro's installed and running on my machine.

I would like to use Tiny Core when I just need to do some quick surfing.
As a result I would like to use Firefox to view on-line videos (full screen) and listen to on-line radio.

I installed VLC but even when I point to it from FF it does not work.
I simply get a message saying that downloads have been completed.

Here is a link to the on-line radio that I am trying to listen to:

http://www.sky.fm/the80s/

I click on the music type that I want to hear, then MP3 stream, then broadband.
It is here that FF gives me the option to brows to the correct program to use.
My path is sda11 > tce > vlc.tcl

Nothing happens.
In my other Linux distros the path is USR > BIN > VLC
With Tiny Core I don't see just VLC, but the file with the .tcl extension or one with that plus .deb

I have VLC installed and it appears as an icon at the bottom of the screen so I don't know why it won't work.

I have alsa installed and have run config in the terminal.

I have also installed MPlayer but that won't work either.

For videos, it tells me that I need Flash and I have read that you have to install Flash 9 manually.
Well I can't even download it.
I click on the file and select save, but FF doesn't even ask me where to save (it should I have it set that way in the preferences).

I have tried to download it from several sources but no joy.

Can someone please help me out here.
I am sure TCL would be an amazing distro (I like how quickly it boots) if only I could get it working properly.

I would greatly appreciate any help that you may give.

For Flash, get the extension getflash10.tcz, then run it after installing/mounting. that will put flash on TC. Restart the browser.

I use OSS not alsa and everything works fine; I have a eeepc, so quite modern but OSS works very well.

I'm not sure is that will get vlc working for you; I have only used it on local files.

My path is sda11 > tce > vlc.tcl

Change the path to /usr/local/bin/vlc

In Tiny Core, the first location to check for binaries is /usr/local/bin

(Or the files tab of the application you want to install from appbrowser.)

The files in your tce directory ending with .tcz .tczl and .tczm are compressed archives.

Thanks, I was not using "Local" in the path name.
Now it works Great!

Okay I used Appbrowser to install getflash10.tcz, but when I restart the browser it still tells me that I need to install Flash.

Do I need to reboot the computer ala Windows?

EDIT:  Nope restarting doesn't help.

How do you run it after installing it?

Okay I installed it and found it under applications.
I clicked on GetFlash10 and it opens a terminal and says it's downloaded and ready to install.
Then it closes the terminal without doing anything else.
I opened the browser and no joy - it still tells me I need to install Flash.

I'll try opening a terminal, but I only know how to do "Apt-get install" and don't know if that will work in Tiny Core.

Any help would be most appreciated.

Okay, it looks like you have to restart and also select backup at the same time (could someone please confirm this).

I can now view the videos, but not in full screen.
Is there anyway to do this?

Please let me know if there is.
