Starting a Linux Distro from Scrarch

Hi, I would like to learn how to build my own linux distro from scratch, nothing special, basically to run apache and php.

Linux From Scratch had a release recently. It's the best place to start:

It would be relatively easy if you base it on Microcore.

See what programs are already available that you could use.

All you would need to do is make extensions for any programs you want to use that are not already available.

imho, may be it's good idea start from tinycore2,3.1?


+ php5.tcz (+all dependencies, including apach2.tczl).

why tinycore2.3.1? i have a lot of problem in 2.4.1  - no sound, no k3b,.... 

all your distro will have 30-50 mb...

Did you update your tcz's to the latest?

oss.tczmand alsa.tczl doesn't work! but in previous version it worked!

what is difference between OSS.tczm and OSS40.tczm

any of this oss tcz can't even install!

but.... How i can adjust sound in my system tcl2.4.1? How to remove old oss and oss40 and install correctly OSS?

Boot with "base norestore", go to your tce directory, delete the extensions. Reboot normally, and install OSS.tczm from the appbrowser.

/usr/local/tce.installed had 2 files - OSS and OSS40. I deleted them!

@Hustle I was thinking the same thing.  I have looked LFS (linux from scratch) and its a pretty solid base as well as a great learning tool.  alot of great linux Os's have been born from it.  as for me i am working on (more like struggling) on making a custom ISO of microcore 2.5 with openbox, pypanel, abiword, emelfm2, opera, geany, gnumeric, and conky.  let me know if you make any progress with yours.

Just curious what problems are running into, since you describe your experience as 'struggling'... Is it integrating a complete such system out of components or building an ISO of such?

I say struggling since i am new to this sort of thing. (ie integrating the extensions into the OS then remastering)  mabey its just not my time to build a custom iso, *shrugs*, i dont know.  but i have dl'd LFS and have been reading it and it seems like as good as any place to start.
