devuan_laptop$ sudo sysctl net.ipv6.conf.wlan0.mtu=1420...and that does not help with the problem. The only thing that helps is having the "mss lock" rule in router's firewall.

Oh, well. For now I'm giving up on looking for an explanation as to why the mss lock is necessary. If I ever do find a convincing explanation I'll make sure to post it here in case it is interesting and/or helpful to others.
