app browser hangs tc2.1
« on: July 16, 2009, 09:21:59 AM »
The app-browser seems  to be fine most of the time, but whenever I have to install a tce with many dependencies, like compiletc or abiword, I find that one of the white aterm download windows freezes.

I looked closely at an instance of this whilst installing abiword where the window libgnomeprint just froze at 0%. I killed the aterm wget process and that window vanished and the rest of the install proceed normally. I then looked in my tce dir and found the libgnomeprint had downloaded properly and libgnomeprint*.so* files were in /usr/local/lib and /usr/local/tce.installed had a libgnomeprint file.

So it seems that the download and install of libgnomeprint was OK - so why the freeze?

What window manager are you using?
I don't use jwm and have not experienced this.
I wonder if you are hitting a limit on how many windows jwm can handle on one desktop?
Can this be seen if another window manager is used?

Just the default JWM with only a few tces installed.

It can't be the number of windows because when I kill the one where it gets stuck, many more will open up subsequently for the rest of the deps.

I'll see if I can provide some more info.
btw love tc - many thanks for all the work!

It is likely internet latency or DNS resolving issues. There has been some discussion of such in other threads. A suggestion, if this happens frequently, is to try to use the DNS server of your ISP and not a cacheing local one.

Ok, thanks, will look into internet latency.

Dns is unlikely to be the cause here as I've scripted the removal of my router's ip from resolv.conf to leave only my isp's dns servers.
