dual boot, extlinux and/or grub
« on: March 27, 2020, 06:12:23 AM »
Dear All,

My computer is ACER ES1-131 (Intel Celeron N3050 -dualcore- ; RAM 2GB ; Storage 32GB eMMC Flash ; Bios is set to legacy boot.)
Tiny Core 10 is installed on it and working fine.

Tiny Core is the only distribution I could install from a live USB-key among many which I tried. All those distribs after installation on "HDD"could not boot on restart.

Even though I am happy with TinyCore I would like to install alongside a more bloated distribution (but still thin enough :-)  ) that fore I need to be able to have a boot menu at start. I do not know how to achieve this using extlinux which is the boot manager installed by TinyCore.
I tried to install grub either grub2-multi or grub-0.97 but both refused to be installed with these messages :
grub-install: warning: cannot open directory '/usr/local/share/locale': No such file or directory
grub-install: warning: your embedding area is unusually small. core.img won't fit in it ..
grub-install: warning: Embedding is not possible. GRUB can only be installed in this setup by using blocklists. However, blocklists are UNRELIABLE and their use is discouraged..
grub-install: error: will not proceed with blocklists.

What shoud I do tweaking with ext linux (but how) or taming grub (by the way I tried for that some recipes found on the web but without success).

Thanks in anticipation, regards

Olivier

I still do not have clear understanding of my grub problems but tweaking extlinux/syslinux is  not that difficult after having read proper documentation :
