these comments about keyboard ui/ux caught my attention

The on-screen keyboard is mentioned only in passing on a deck titled “Other Great Innovations” as “Predictive, corrective input from on-screen qwerty-keypad”. Most of the existing smartphone makers simply could not believe the iPhone’s touchscreen keyboard would work. Steve Ballmer famously laughed his way into getting sacked from Microsoft over the iPhone’s price and lack of a hardware keyboard. BlackBerry was obsessed with hardware keyboards. This Nokia deck is remarkably open to the idea that Apple was onto something. It does have a bullet point, under “iPhone has the biggest impact on the definition of coolness” (true!), that states: “Even though Steve Jobs emphasized iPhone superiority to ‘Buttons’, it is to be expected that the Consumer QWERTY category will continue to succeed.” But still, this deck is remarkable for acknowledging the potential significance of the iPhone’s keyboard.

i would never buy a mobile computer without a proper screen+keyboard any more. but i have 3 backup thinkpads which should last a long time anyways

though wrt phones im mostly in agreement with hiro
disposable tablets are increasingly ubiquitous

which after a little more scrutiny it appears  unfortunately  depends on wayland/gnome & systemd ,..

just to clarify my meaning hear


can core(.gz) alone support some kind of onscreen keyboard ?

some tablets appear to have ( i presume in somekind of efi frame buffer .all though the precise terminology is over my heat atm )
onscreen keyboard available in eg grub2 or syslinux for text input 

although using different/non-default resolutions can make it scale wrong
i guess it might ( not shore how ) be available after *whatever* kernel gfx driver(s) takes over display (buffer?? yes i likely read much and understand little ) 
 
if not id take a wild guess an osk could potentially be supported in core.gz terminal via some kernel/driver config  + (imaginary afaik unimplemented) software

but likely getting such a setup working
would endup  being less generic and more tied to *whatever* specific hw
