Can't get Icewm to work with Microcore?!%#
« on: June 27, 2009, 07:31:46 PM »
OK, I've tried icewm with both tc and mc and can't get it to work.
At desktop I have wallpaper and wbar but no mouse pointer, just a X

so, what am I doing wrong, or what to do?
thanks

Sounds like you have a missing dependency.  Use wbar to open a terminal and enter the command "icewm" and it should explain what is missing.  I thought I covered everything in the dep file but maybe not.

Not to be off-topic, but I also have the same issue with aewm++ and evilwm.

More info, I am using microcore I downloaded this morning, have alot of tce's installed
+ core.elements downloaded this morning too.

Openbox's problem is when I minimize a window it disappears and I can't call it up or find it.

I'm just trying to get all the wm's I can, not bitching or anything, I love team tc and tinycore.

I been playing with DSL/Tinycore for awhile and they rock.
You guys are, bar none, Best support team in Linux ;D
No doubt.

Openbox's hiding minimized windows sounds like Blackbox, and it is the default behavior in Blackbox.

But I know I overlooked a dep in icewm at one time, let me boot with "base norestore nolocal" and see if it is still missing.

Icewm is depending on the imlib.tczl extension.  I will rebuild it as it does not need that 1.3mb extension as a dependency, either disabling imlib or using the imlib2-dev extension to depend on imlib in base will be better.

Your the man!
Thanks alot, so, should I redownload all the stuff in the morning or what?

also, I also did'n't tell you I'm doing this in my portable-qemu off usb with micro installed to partitioned qemu-img;
I hope that's not affecting my results, Could it affect anything with the WM's??
I'm trying to get all the WM's working so I can finish it, upload it and announce it on tc forum
"Portable_Microcore_2.1rc2"
runs from any partition type, off usb, hd, in windows an linux

JWM and OB both run great.

Rebuilt Icewm to only depend on fontconfig and expat2, bringing the extension size down by 100kb and much more in keeping with the TC mindset.  The only difference is some trivial eye candy.

OK, it works now, BUT how do I get a wallpaper working?

I tried several ways, but cannot get anything except a gray screen, no color or anything.
and no errors from terminal when starting icewm either.

also, is there a way to move icewm panel to top of desktop, as with JWM?
thanks

esetroot is the command I would use to set background images and such.

Also, in the file /usr/local/share/icewm/preferences, line 203 is where you set the taskbar to be at the top of the screen.

OK, thanks Jason, I will try it..

I still haven't gotten aewm, evilwm, or tinywm to work right...?

Windowmaker works good, but the button icons in top right corner don't work and
I can't seem to fix anything with it?

I am not familiar with the other mentioned WM's.

The buttons in the top right corner always work for me in windowmaker.  Try booting with "base nolocal norestore", download the extension, and do not use a mounted home directory and see if that helps the situation.

Ahhh....maybe that's my problem; I installed all wm's at once, while also using
home=xxx opt=xxx

here's my menu.lst

title PortableCore_2.1rc2
root (hd0,0)
kernel /boot/bzImage quiet desktop=icewm restore=hda1 tce=hda1 home=hda1 opt=hda1
initrd /boot/microcore.gz

So, I should delete icewm, then use base nolocal norestore, and install, then backup, then reboot
or what?

I would generally only have one WM installed and boot with it to ensure proper function.  It should work that way even with a mounted home in use.

I'll look into aewm++, evilwm and tinywm when I get a chance (probably tomorrow). I have seen these window managers not startup but that seems to be a common problem that is fixed in 2.1. Also, tinywm does not change the cursor for you so you will have the X cursor when it starts. This can be changed with xsetroot.
