Firefox plugins for videos

Which plugins should be installed to make FF play videos (youtube/vimeo) out of the box?

Firefox can play video via HTML5 out of the box but if you need Flash you can install  getFlash11.tcz  which contains a script to download latest Flash11 an create an extension (flash11.tcz) which will be set on-boot automatically.

That is not quite correct. Firefox for Linux can not play MP4 (H.264 / AAC) via HTML5 by default.

Either just run

getFlash11.sh

or, from your Window Manager's desktop menu, "Applications" -> "getFlash11".

I didn't say Firefox can play anything. YouTube works without Flash. No idea what video format is used in that case. Hopefully we can get rid of Flash entirely at some point.

You don't need Flash for YouTube nor Vimeo.

You simply need to install the following extensions:

ffmpeg.tcz
gstreamer0.10.tcz
gst-plugins-base0.10.tcz
gst-plugins-good0.10.tcz
gst-plugins-bad0.10.tcz
gst-plugins-ugly0.10.tcz
gst-ffmpeg.tcz

and making sure that media.gstreamer.enabled is set to true in about:config, then Firefox should be able to play MP4 videos through HTML5.

YouTube works without Flash. No idea what video format is used in that case.

YouTube uses WebM if the browser does not support MP4 (H.264 / AAC):

Again, once you install GStreamer and FFmpeg/Libav though, Firefox for Linux can also play MP4 via HTML5.

Ah, i forgot: the h.264 extension is useful? I never saw that beast  in slackware ... (?)

If you use the terminal then simply load getFlash11, then enter  getFlash.sh   (without the ./) to get flash with the latest security patches which will play your videos perfectly

With all the HTML5 chatter, we may forget that Firefox for Linux also plays h264/aac video and audio from an MP4 container via Flash11 without installing any other player or codec extensions



Though it's nice to have alternatives available to Flash

HTML5 didn't made me forget about Flash yet. Both are terrible to be used for streaming though, on a low spec netbook with a crappy internet connection that is - Have also seen bad performance on high spec laptops running on battery with excellent net connection. Too bad it's sometimes assumed most users of the Web use 'capable' hardware. Watching those videos via local media player gives way better performance, fast seeking, other pros etc. My low spec netbook has 2GB RAM which is sufficient to hold several videos (in /tmp/) since Tiny Core itself doesn't need much (a little more than 100MB RAM usage if the system is relatively 'bloated'). Watching videos in the browser with this box is no joy. For those folks where it works... "Yay!" - Otherwise there are alternatives.

Just one thing I have discovered.  There can be a performance issue while watching video via Flash11 when VLC is loaded.   
For now, I place VLC in Ondemand so that none of it's new streaming capabilities effect Flash11

Think of mine Delli1011(v), 1 gig ram, 16 gig sata flash ...
