MySQL Server
« on: June 25, 2014, 07:56:23 AM »
Hi all,

apologies for probably wasting your time, but I seem to be missing the obvious.

As I understand, MySQL has been replaced by MariaDB. MariaDB.tcz in the repo is client focused, but I'm looking for the server bits. What should be used, in order so set up a MySQL server?

Regards

Carsten

The MariaDB server components must be packed to TCZ. It is partly made, but need some free time to finish. It will come soon for x86 / x86_64 and Raspberry Pi. Be patient a while.

HI BMarkus,

thanks for that!

Just out of interest, what was the reason to abandon MySQL and replace it with MariaDB?

Carsten

MySQL is now owned by ORACLE and getting integrated into their portfolio. While it is still free, there are doubts how ORACLE will change licensing as MySQL is competing with their DB products.. There are LINUX distros already dropped MySQL and include MariaDB and companies also moved from MySQL to MariaDB.

MariaDB is developed by former MySQL developers. As time goes MySQL and MariaDB will offer different new features, but keeping certain compatibility. You can not say definite no or yes for one. Now for TC there are more pros for MariaDB.
