this works nice as it is...(this console tool uses the Pleer.com music database. It seems like a very comprehensive DB according to google...but it's not the actual spotify music database...).

The sister tool lower down here called "mps-youtube" does indeed use the proper youtube database.....you can also instruct it to just return youtube "music links" instead of youtube videos and set the mplayer arguments to "-novideo"

1) install python.tcz
2) install "git" from the tcl repo

     git.tczgit clone https://github.com/np1/mps.git
3) follow the GIT command above
4) change into the mps directory
5) start the player by using  "python mps" at the command prompt
6) type an artist search with the dot   e.g   .cocteau twins     (enter)
7) see the list of songs and choose which to play  e.g    1,2,3   (enter)

Vin

This idea also works with the sister tool called mps-youtube  (No flash needed for watching youtube vids)

You simply follow the same steps for "mps-youtube" as above but with the sister tool mentioned on the web page called "mps-youtube".   There is just one extra library needed  called the "Pafy" library which talks to youtube.
You git download that "Pafy" library in the same fasion into your "mps-youtube" directory.
with the command

git clone https://github.com/np1/mps-youtube.git
git clone https://github.com/np1.github.io/pafy

or

git clone https://github.com/np1/pafy  (.git)

Make sure you also install "mplayer no-deps".  Delete the existing mplayer config file and make a new one
containing just two lines

zoom=true
ontop=true

THis keeps your youtbe videos ontop of your screen all the time in  a small window OR you can press "F" and
have the youtube videos go full screen.

To use the "mps-youtube" tool

1) go to it's directory and type  "python mpsyt"
2) To search for videos about say Polar Bears you need the dot.....    ".polar bear"
3) you will see 20 videos on Polar bears and to see the next 20 press "n"
4) All the help files are under help........... for this mps youtbe tool.
5) To play videos from list position 2 upwards....type  "2-"   or to play videos 12 and 19 type  "12,19"
6) etc etc etc
7) to skip a playing vid and onto the next press "q"

it's all on the webpage.

thx

Vin
