Ive got started but how do I go on from here?
« on: December 31, 2013, 10:01:22 AM »
hi,
I've booted from the tinycore CD, and from the CorePlus one. I installed to a hard drive from the CorePlus. Using the terminal I can ping out ok so I know the network is working.

I used the editor in the installed version to type something and save it and read it back.

Next step - in any of those three environments (the two live CDs or after booting from the frugal install) how do I do anything else?

Like, as a worked example, how do I find out what browsers are available and chhose one and get to the point where I can use it?

I right clicked on the desktop, and chose system then apps. This looks like it might be on the right track, but everything is greyed out. What am I missing?

Thanks

Feel free to point me at a relevant manual or wiki page, I'm sure there must be one that is relevant.

After starting Apps, click on the 'Apps' button.
Then you can select Cloud->Browse.

OK, so I found some browsers and I selected seamonkey as I've used it in Puppy.

Then I selected "download and load" and clicked "Go" and something happened as I got a window that showed me all sorts of things happening.

But there is still no browser. It does not show anywhere I've thought to look. How do I invoke it?

PLEASE, is there a page with a simple worked through "this is how you find an app and use it", because I've spent hours looking at the wiki and not found one, nor can I get my head round how this is supposed to be used.

Or if not, would someone walk me through the process as I am just not getting it, and if I have to come back here and ask every second mouse click I will just go and try something else.

Once I've seen how it is meant to be used I can start to get the general idea.

And there was a time when I thought Gentoo was opaque, but at least there are howtos over there that work if you follow them....

Core is not a install and run distribution.
It is a tool set for building custom systems.
You need to read the core concepts, FAQ and wiki pages.

hi Gerald,

yes, I understand that.

I've installed complete systems from Gentoo in the past, one package at a time. But I can't seem to grok the basic way of going about things in this distro precisely because things are so different from a traditionally installed system..

There is a LOT of obviously useful info in the wiki, but my mind isn't fitting it together (yet) (or ever, as if I do not get going soon I will lose interest)

Hi trueriver,

Don't give up - Tiny Core is worth taking some time.  Its also worth a little more than an "rtfm".

I just loaded seamonkey.tcz (in core 4.7.7 in a qemu vm on Win7) and I suspect there's something wrong with the .desktop file for seamonkey because I got no icon in my wbar nor any entry in the flwm_topside applications menu.

If you open a terminal window and try to run seamonkey from the command line, does it run?  It does in my vm.

USB Flash drive, one partition, ext2, grub4dos  | Otherwise similar

The same is true for Core 5.1

there are a couple of problems with the seamonkey extension:

It is built in /usr rather than the tc standard of /usr/local

The desktop file does not have the same name as the extension and is missing the X-FullPathIcon entry, which means it will not have an icon or a menu item

I suggest you pm the maintainer and request a fix.
