thanks for feedback so far

gerald_clark
would you accept the idea you don't always need gutenprint as onboot, or personally  do you need it, for eg for a filter function cups can't supply?
ie is my assertion in the potential info file misleading?

cheers

Gutenprint has the only working driver I could find for CUPS for the HP 6127.

So I assume you have tried hplip* and I infer you need the gutenprint filters so have gutenprint loaded when printed. Maybe I was unclear in my question?

a quick search  http://www.openprinting.org/printer/HP/HP-DeskJet_6127
suggests hplip and also cdj970 or pcl3

as a stroke of luck? I am submitting foomatic-db and its engine, big download and it has HP-DeskJet_970C-pcl3.ppd
However another forum user tried to test a different PPD and that failed, so maybe we need the foomatic-rip filter to use this PPD
time will tell, ETA one week if my skils were sufficient?

but foomatic-rip has now landed in repository and the foomtic PPD says
Quote
The printer must be configured with the *% "foomatic-rip" backend filter script of Foomatic 4.0.0 or newer

aah I have just discovered an error log for cups trying to load a false HP PPD when I have a diff printer

You can safely ignore those errors without having to load samba3

It has been over a year since I tried hplip.
I just tried it now, and it appears to be working on my HP6127.

I don't have a gutenprint theme yet but for those who have epson, even tho I have no PPD
Code: [Select]
escputil --ink-level --raw-device /dev/usb/lp0
Escputil version 5.2.9, Copyright (C) 2000-2006 Robert Krawitz
Escputil comes with ABSOLUTELY NO WARRANTY; for details type 'escputil -l'
This is free software, and you are welcome to redistribute it
under certain conditions; type 'escputil -l' for details.

Unknown printer XP-100 Series!
           Ink color       Percent remaining
         Photo Black                      58
              Yellow                      79
             Magenta                      79
                Cyan                      76

command is from gutenprint

Is anyone using CUPS and need to find OR use a non-local printer?

non-local meaning it does NOT fall into these types
usb lead direct from TC to printer
ethernet cable to router---usb lead to printer
ethernet cable to router--wireless signal to printer
wireless signal to router---usb lead to printer
wireless signal to router  --wireless signal to printer
wireless signal to printer

an example of non-local would be (say) you had 2 routers in your house
router 1 is visible to TC
router 2 is not

router 2 has another printer associated with it.

The reason I ask is I have built cups 1.6.2 and new dependency cups-filters but I would like know how many users actually need a new function called cups-browsed.......which I have split off from cups-filters.

The split reduces the complexity of cups-filters and size etc

Yleisajattelija

I have only just remembered your samsung....and we have a possible source for splix
http://sourceforge.net/projects/splix/?source=dlp

are you now using a private extension based on splix?

edit, I was going to try to use the splix makefile but I am not too good with them,
ok I might not be too good with much eh?

looks like I will build a private extension off the debian file at openprinting.org
but no 3185 PPD in this package either.
