What kind of printer do you use on TC please?
« on: February 14, 2013, 06:35:49 AM »
EDIT

I have changed poll questions a number of times, its not meant to be accurate but act as guide to me.

Hi

I am researching Cups upgrade with no guarantee that I will become the maintainer. But Juanito is aware of my interest.

FWIW it appears later Cups splits between cups and cups-filters.
It appears that most scattermode distros use cups with a dependency of libusb, and so if built that way, would mean we need blacklist a kernel module called usblp or have a manual command to remove it eg sudo modprobe -r usblp
---I am sure there are smarter ways but this is just a preliminary discussion
-------bootloader config or bootlocal config may need changing if libusb is the preferred build

The poll is my attempt to see how many people (willing to respond) use what connections

You can change your vote, if I planned it right. Let me know if I have missed anything out ok?

poll has no end date at this stage

good luck

For those with wireless capable printers and wireless devices in pc, can you advise if current cups works for wireless or not.
This is not meant to give feedback to existing maintainer but give me some possible user names I might pm if I build something and would like volunteers to test something.

If this causes you grief just say you don't wish to receive any pm ok?

HP Deskjet 1055 over USB.
Requires hplip-2.7.tcz and ghostscript_common.tcz in addition to cups.tcz
Scanning is accomplished with hplip-sane-2.7.tcz and pil-2.7.tcz.

Hi

I have reset the votes but appear to not able to increase the votes.

I have decided to use it to look for Optional dependencies for cups
and, at this stage, can dismiss scanner non-cups packages.

Anyone who has previously voted can change their vote if they wish but they are not forced to if they have also posted.
This is not a poll to ban anything but gather info for me.

I should mention one of the reasons why I asked for scanner info is because of libusb being involved for some scanners.

Thanks for sharing info

Currently: Lexmark X543 colour multifunction (printer only)
Previously Fuji-xerox Docuprint C1110

Both networked. Both worked out-of-the-box with the supplied ppd files & CUPS.

Thanks everyone for voting so far

I like gutenprint myself as it does have a large set of driver ppds. I wlll see if perthie is ok for me to have a go updating.
Looks like I need to amend poll for ethernet. Members can change their votes but anyone who has posted, no need as I know what you do thanks. Your choice of course. Vote not reset this time.

USB Samsung CLX-3185 multifuntion device.

I have hacked samsung unified driver to work with TC, but cannot publish it for copyright reasons. Samsung has now released wire specification to openprinting, so it should be included on CUPS.

I currently have a Makefile error compiling open source foomatic-db.....required by foomatic-db-engine to generate PPDS

but according to this, yours is not in there

Code: [Select]
tc@box:/mnt/sda3/tczs/foomatic-db-20130217/db/source/printer$ ls | grep Samsung-CLX
Samsung-CLX-2160.xml
Samsung-CLX-3160.xml
Samsung-CLX-3175.xml

EDIT if I remove --with-drivers=ALL from configure it builds so lets see if I can progress

gerald_clark or other gutenprint users
v5.2.9 has PPDs for HPOfficejet G85, HP Deskjet 6127 but AFAIK not for other models specified already above.

Rather than send you a pm, let me advise that work on upgrading gutenprint is almost complete. But as I don't use it, I wonder  if any of you care to offer advice including negative advice on some matter I intend to raise in the info file. Ideally I would like to provide a better cups info but lets stay with this one for the moment.  tcz is built but seeking advice on info file

Also I will consider a second build called gutenprint-gimp which will (or hopefully so as not built) enable the gimp-plugin.
I am aware that some users might find I put too much info into an info instead of relying on a wiki or tce news page etc. Well here is your chance of telling me off before submission?  I repeat negative comments are welcome here.

1) gutenprint will become main, locale, doc, dev and ijs tcz
2) possible info file for feedback
Code: [Select]
Title:          gutenprint.tcz
Description:    Gutenprint printer drivers for CUPS
Version:        5.2.9
Author:         see gutenprint-doc/AUTHORS
Original-site:  http://sourceforge.net/projects/gimp-print/files/gutenprint-5.2/5.2.9
Copying-policy: GPL v2
Size: 4.8M
Extension_by:   aus9
Tags:     Gutenprint printer drivers CUPS PPD
Comments:       The Gutenprint package contains plug-and-play drivers for hundreds of printers.
It generates PPD files dynamically to save space on your hard drive. This allows
printing only for some single or multifunction or all-in-ones printers. There are other tczs
that may offer PPDs. This tcz does not have the gimp plugin by compile design.

Optional TCZ: gutenprint-ijs

** Note well for this UPGRADE, **
We now use /usr/local/etc so pls follow the info file for cups on installing
and backing up any needed file. This means re-starting cups and re-doing the
add or find printer to establish new pathways to your PPD file and other printer
backup files as needed. Then amend your filetool.lst as required.

This tcz also offers a command option to interact with some Epson printers called
escputil. Depending on how you intend to use this tcz, if you only are looking for a PPD
then this tcz does not need to be onboot. YMMV. If you need the filter function such
as for raster data, then consider making this a dependency of cups.tcz, but cups also offers
some filters.

I recommend the gutenprint-doc.tcz on further tips on how to use this package.

Change-log:     2009/08/30 - first version
                2009/10/07 - updated for CUPS 1.3.11 (perthie)
        2011/10/09 - adjusted permissions (Juanito)
Current: 2013/03/02 - updated to 5.2.9 (aus9)

I think critical information belongs in the info and doc files.
A user should not need to go to the wiki or forum to install and configure.

I don't think the info file is too long.
