is there a way to download ALL the repo?

and also how big would it be?

I am considering a remastering project where a cd is completely packed with extensions. Would be nice to just load extensions locally as and when theyr needed.

it would load the basic wifi stuff a web browser emelfm and vim and then whatever else is needed would be on the cd as and when theyr nee ded.

i thought this kind of thing would already be available, like a core plus but with every other extension ready to be loaded from cd?

There are over 4000 extensions in the repo ranging in size from a few K bytes to over 460Meg bytes, you couldn't
possibly need all of them. The repo is over 9Gig bytes currently. The repo is a shared resource and downloading
it in it's entirety is considered to be bad form. Besides all of the bandwidth you'll deprive others of, the site where
the repo is hosted may have limits on how much data per month can be downloaded, which you would also
seriously impact.

i don't think we should generally exclude this possibility as traffic got quite cheap.
perhaps you can directly ask some of the mirror maintainers in private...

for you personally I guess the best would be to just use tce-load with all applications you need and then mirror just that for your stuff.

fair enough, just think it would be really handy to be able to have all the most common extensions on one disc and maybe if people are going places where there is no internet access, but i do appreciate there are resources at steak and i guess the ethos is more along the lines of MINIMAL which i do respect.

A bit of a brain fart that hasn't been thought through properly, and possibly derailing the thread, but anyway...You point out the part of TC I love second best (The part I love best is KNOWING i have a pristine system every boot), but I wonder if that idea might not be applicable as a demo ISO? Sort of a "Look what core can do!" thing that can be handed out when the team go to events like the recent expo.

Actually, what ever web server serves up the TCZ files should be logging, and those log files could be analysed to generate download stats. Don't know if the effort is worth it, but it should in theory be pretty trivial.

sorry if I state the obvious but would not downloading all tczs, based on Rich's reply earlier mean they won't fit onto a cd,
heck they won't fit on multiple dvds either. Maybe it could be an usb stick or sd card image?

So you are back to square one, fit the best apps you like to show off onto a cd. HMM, nope that won't work either. Maybe a cd for pre-teens that autoloads and plays Justin Bieber. A cd for teens that autoloads and plays Taylor Swift. A cd for young adults that auto starts a web browser and takes them to face book. A cd for middle aged adults that takes them to the latest trend in dieting. A cd for the oldies that auto plays Justin Bieber so their grand children will think they are cool pops and grannies.

I am joking of course, I have never heard of Taylor Swift but have heard of Cara Dillon.

While we could get stats of the main server, we have no such access to the set of mirrors, so they would be fairly limited. So probably not too useful for authoritative popularity stats, but could be interesting data on its own.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Even if download statistics would easily be available, no direct conclusions could be drawn from "most commonly downloaded" to "most commonly" used.

An example:
10 users are using kde4-desktop.tcz with a PPR, downloading at most at every update of extension.
1 user is using somesmallobscureappwhichnobodyelseuses.tcz in cloud mode, downloading on a daily base.
How would one draw any conclusion which extension is more commonly used based on download stats?

was thinking more along the lines of multiple web browsers multiple email clients multiple editors and file browsers and terminals, along with the more essential wifi tools and sound tools etc.. we dont need stats to tell us what the essentials are and what the popular apps are. the unique ability that tc has is the option to test different pieces of software without having to deal with the clutter. i understand the cloud ethos but the cloud isnt always avail able for some people on the move etc.)

multiple everything. Different people prefer different programs, also it gives a chance to experiment with them to work out which ones you prefer. It also means that everything you need and the majority of the things that you want are readily available without the need for internet. Its all well and good being sat at home with your fully customized TC setup. But what about those who wish to use it as a recovery tool, or those who wish to simply see what its like. If they have to jump through the hoops to get to grips with TC they may be easily put off. Consider a programmer who couldnt care less about going online and just wants to sit and write/compile, is he going to sit there and do it all in vi when his preference is vim? maybe.. but he probably wont be happy about it. Consider the newb who is using linux for his first time, it all seems a bit confusing and daunting, he is likely to bin off. I appreciate that TC is aimed to the more savvy user anyway, but it wouldn't take too much work for it to be a gateway OS. I can think of loads of people who would love to use TC for its minimalist speed and consistency, but they wouldnt know where to begin with it, is it wise to dismiss these types of people? just because they are not linux savvy it doesnt mean that they have nothing to offer to the community..

and then there's all the libs, who cares if everything depends on it and thus it gets more popular. simple tools that do just one small job really well would also always be less "common" in this sense although perhaps everyone would recommend just that for a certain specified task if you ask.
