Foxit Reader retired.
« on: February 25, 2013, 11:42:56 PM »
Due to Foxit's redistribution requirements, Foxit Reader has been retired from the tcz and scm repos.

When Foxit Reader was added to the repo, it was allowed to be redistributed provided that the redistributor did not distribute Foxit on mobile or embedded platforms.  As per this:

http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=1&ved=0CC8QFjAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fcdn04.foxitsoftware.com%2Fpub%2Ffoxit%2Fmanual%2Fenu%2FFoxitReader33_Manual.pdf&ei=OjwsUf_BJoLM9ATv9YDAAw&usg=AFQjCNFscPoTNbZHus8ZrHrveNqQWAGbPA

Now it has been changed to require written permission for redistribution.

Thanks for understanding our adhering to the change in distribution requirements, listed below:

I assume those of us who currently use it are still allowed to (by the license I mean)?

Hi thane
Yes, if you have it you can still use it. If anyone else wants it, they need to download it from the Foxit website themselves.

Thanks Rich.

To aus9, no gripes from me. Foxit Reader on TCL is a good app. You didn't write the redistribution requirements.

Hi Jason W
Pardon my ignorance, but don't the packages they (Foxit) offer for downloading also have to contain a copy of any
user agreements? I just downloaded the package and there are no user agreements within it or the help file that
I can find.
Also the wording used in http://www.foxitsoftware.com/pdf/rd_rla.htm:
Quote
and any organization who intends to distribute Foxit PDF Reader to the organization's customers
Tinycore does not intend to distribute, it is currently distributing. The wording does not make it retroactive.
Even if it were retroactive:
Quote
Redistributor should not redistribute any version of Reader to general public, via any media, without prior written authorization from Foxit.
Foxit is not being redistributed to the general public, but to Tinycore customers who use the Tinycore product. It's not
packaged to be used with other distros or operating systems.
Mind you, I'm not arguing whether the package should or should not have been pulled. Just asking a question and
making a few observations.

Well, it does state:
Quote
A copy of End User License Agreement for Reader (available on Foxit website) should always accompany any distribution of Reader.

I had been pondering the same regarding retroactivity before reading your post.

I saw that too and had considered mentioning it, but it does say should, not must.

I guess one more question I have is, if you package an extension conforming to the EULA, and the EULA gets
changed in the future, do you really have to stop distributing it if it wasn't updated since the original EULA it was
packaged under? With about 4200 packages in the repo, that would be a lot to keep track of.

well guys my dobbing in this tcz was based purely on the EULA

ok I can't lie to you, (eyes start blinking) I was planning to update all blofsy packages and had created a different type  tcz with  a working EULA and it was rejected. The updates of blofsy starting before my rejection. Its very unusual for me to get any rejections as I am so good looking and have a 6 pack
(ITF)

so when I saw that foxit did not have a working EULA that is when I reported it.

Since the EULA was different when we made the foxit extension than it is now, though foxit reader for Linux on their download site is still on that same 1.1 version made in 2009, it is a good question whether a license change is to be considered retroactive.

But for now, I have updated the foxit fetch and install script to work with TC 4.x.  If someone wants to make an extension of the fetch script and maintain it, feel free.

Hi Jason W
Thanks for the response. I guess then you should also remove Foxit from the 3.X repository.
