Installation problem with X
« on: February 27, 2013, 12:25:14 AM »
Hello,

I'm not new to Linux but very very new to Tiny Core. I'm attempting to install on a specialized robotics board, specifically the Roboard RB110 which is a VortexDX86 System on a Chip based computer that runs the i468 instruction set and has a wapping 256M of memory. It happily runs Debian 6.0.6 at 1024x768 with graphics but I'm looking for a less bloated solution.

I'm using the 4.7.5 core-plus iso image to install, however it is dropping to a text prompt regardless of window manager (the tiny core splash screen displays fine during boot). I attempted to follow the FAQ procedure to use a frame buffer (boot with tce=sda1 text vga=791) then tce-load -wi Xfvdev.tgz but it fails during installation with an error Line 302 desktop.sh not found. The xsetup.sh and startx commands are still not available after the failed install.

I tried a forum search on desktop.sh but didn't  find anything looking promising and I'm at the stage where I'm not even sure I know how to formulate the question correctly, hence this post.

Any help appreciated, even if its a hey moron check this post.

Thanks

Ray

Hi zaphod80013
When you got to step 5 here:
http://tinycorelinux.net/install.html#5_
did you remember to select X/GUI Desktop? In step 6 did you select the Install Extensions option?
Also, using the  text  boot code means don't load the GUI.

That should probably be "Xfbdev.tcz"
Better use tce-ab rather than tce-load if not sure about extension names.

Thanks for the replies,

The Xfv was a typo in the post i was using Xfbdev.tcz in the attempt. I'm not getting as far as the TC installer, it's the initial boot off of the core-plus that is dropping to a shell; I was trying to use the frame buffer in order to be able to run the TC installer.

Hi zaphod80013
Are you booting Coreplus from a CD or a USB thumb drive? If it's a thumb drive, what did you use to transfer the
ISO to it. Also, did you try booting without the   text   boot code?
