Show off your TCB desktop!
« on: November 05, 2012, 07:27:04 AM »
Hello people,

Could not find any thread regarding this, I just installed TC on my netbook and loving it. However, I am very curious to see what you people have done to your TC boxes.

I haven't done anything to my box yet, what have you done? show me! :)

Though this was a good time to pep up the gallery with a shot of my conky,  so uploaded a favorite desktop screenshot.  Alas, uploading the image "mycoredesktop.jpg" to the wiki doesn't automatically include it to the gallery.  Looks like that is a separate directory on the wiki server and a job for an admin ?

I'm always trying new windows managers.  Am really impressed with Xfwm4 (in repo, thanks bmarkus for this)   replace thunar with fluff and you have one of the most useable and pleasing desktops yet.!!

I finally got around to trying dwm the other day, then Xfce and lxde.  I didn't expect to like dwm as I'm not a tiling wm kid of guy.  Xfce and lxde both seemed ok and I couldn't say anything about either of them was a real show stopper... but neither of them really got me excited in the least, so I'm sticking with jwm:

Some of the old timers might remember the background - I've gimped it out to 1920x1080 for the big screen but I use it on the 1024x768, too.  The "Core" button on the tray brings up a custom menu that's mostly static, though parts of it are built at boot time based on what physical host Core is running on.  Wbar is there but about 95% transparent until mouseover.

BTW:  How -does- one post a screen shot to the wiki screen shots page?  And are there specific rules or conventions for screen shots posted?  Taking for granted, of course, that they should be legal and in reasonably good taste.

I added instructions to the screenshots wiki page. Seems a bit weird compared to the old wiki system, but should work. Please report if there are any issues.

@Lee:

Yeah, I remember that pic :)

I'd be interested to see your .jwmrc-tray

The problem with wiki screenshots is that you can't really share any information about your setup or ask someone else questions about theirs? (what window manager, theme, etc, how'd you get the funky meters in your conky, blah blah).... And on that topic, I'd be really interested in seeing your conky config, Lee!

Thanks for the instructions - but I don't see the image.  I thought at first it was because I uploaded it as a .jpg so I uploaded it a second time as LeePc_screenshot.png but I still don't see it.  It shows up in the file list on the upload page, but not in the screen shots page (even after a refresh).

Lee:

I'd be interested to see your .jwmrc-tray

I'll be happy to post it but I'd better look at it closely first - I seem to recall it has some user names and passwords embedded in it that I'll need to redact.  I'll post it this evening.

It has some bits in it that roberts probably won't care for.  :)   Like webb http://forum.tinycorelinux.net/index.php/topic,14350.msg81032.html#msg81032, I did not initially understand the ondemand system and I implemented a rudimentary ondemand system of my own, which is hinted at in the .jwmrc-tray file.

The refresh link is special, it refreshes the cache. Another dokuwiki quirk.

I can see both of your pics in the gallery.

I'll be happy to share my conky config file - but its a bit verbose as it contains a section like this
Code: [Select]
${if_existing /mnt/sdb1}\
${if_mounted /mnt/sdb1}\
hdb1    ${fs_bar 4 /mnt/sdb1}
${else}\
hdb1
${endif}\
${endif}\
for every one of sd?? and hd?? that I'm ever likely to have.  I'm thinking maybe some day I'll find out what kicks of rebuildfstab and have it rebuild that part of the conky config on the fly.  In the mean time, the file is pretty big.

Rather than post it here on the forum, how about if I paste it on my "My Talk" page on the wiki?  I'll have to figure out how to attach files to the wiki but it shouldn't be too hard - looks like there's a button for that.

Just click on my web url below my avatar (at left) - its pointed to my "My Talk" wiki page.  (but wait until this evening).

Thanks - I can see them now, too.

Can I, or can you, delete the .png version of the file - its identical except for the file format and its much bigger than the .jpg.  I didn't see an obvious way to delete a file.
