I didn't and now I do and that got me alsaconf
After I got alsamixer I wonder if I need alsaconf ?

To set up alsa you'll need to do either:

"sudo alsaconf"
or
"sudo /usr/local/etc/init.d/alsasound start"

BUT............
When I do :

aconnect -oI get :
"ALSA lib seq_hw.c:457:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed:"
"No such file or directory                                                                           " 

This is sorta like when SmallBasic wouldn't work.
Does anyone have Alsa up and running ?

Yes but never used "aconnect -o"  where does that come from.?   to get AlSA running I just follow the info file. then backup the required files
