Is TC right for my needs?

I am looking to dual boot with openelec and I want to have a very simple interface for checking emails RSS feeds and weather. A browser could be useful but not needed.
I want a very fast boot as its going on a acer revo 3610 in the bedroom connecting via wifi. The idea is that I can boot in the morning and get the news weather and emails in bed before getting up. A browser could be useful but not essential if its easier to work with an all in one programme.
I was thinking I could install something like thunderbird get it to start at boot.
I am a beginner with linux but have used a few distros.

Yes, TC is pretty much what you're looking for: fast and nothing unnecessary.
For starting X apps on boot like Thunderbird, see the FAQ.
