Install Core To Hard Drive
« on: February 22, 2012, 01:47:44 AM »
I'm needing an extremely minimal Linux OS to run a game server (Minecraft) and I think Core will work great for my needs (I only need a few programs and no gui).

I know that you can use tc-install.tcz to install Tiny Core but I can't seem to find any install instructions for just Core. I tried installing Tiny Core with tc-install and selecting "Don't Install Extensions" but it still installed a GUI.

Are there any instructions on how to install Core to a hard drive?

Thanks  :)

Hi ShadowsDemise
I've never installed the non-GUI version, however, if you use the boot code  text , you will boot to the console.

That seems like a good alternative if I can't find out how to install just Core. Would the files that are needed to run the GUI be loaded into memory even when text is enabled in the boot code?

Just in case you're not aware, there's a remaster of Core that already ships with the Minecraft server and a web admin interface.
The only barriers that can stop you are the ones you create yourself.

Hi ShadowsDemise
Go to the link that bmarkus provided and look at the image in step 5. If you do an install using the CorePlus CD
you get a choice between GUI or text.

I was thinking about installing Mine OS+ but I decided that I'd rather just have a bare system. I don't think I'd use WebGUI anyways. Thanks for bringing this up though.

I tried installing TinyCore with the option "Don't Install Extensions" which says that I would only have the text based interface but it ended up installing the GUI too. I will try Installing CorePlus with the "Core Only" option and see if that will work.

Hi ShadowsDemise
Looking at image #6 in the instructions, I would expect  a non GUI environment too, it's possible there may be a bug
in the installer.

Hi:
I think you also could do a manual hd install by using a boot loader (grub) and the files from
the core live cd.
0. boot from core live cd
1. use a blank hd
2. do your partitioning
3. create a /boot partition
4. install grub
5.copy files from cd into /boot
6. edit menu.lst in /boot/grub

just an idea - hope it helps?
t(w)o be(ers) or not t(w)o be(ers) that is the question

make sure you are not booting again from CD getting GUI.
I did microcore installations using CorePlus tc-intall many times. Unlikely there is a bug.

Is there an instruction how to install TC using command line only?

Yes, but ShadowsDemise did his install using Tinycore, which puts up image #6 instead of image #5. So
it's possible a different section of code is executing for that.

AppsAudit or vi can always be used to remove the X components from onboot.

Yes, there is indeed a bug that prevents a text only install when running the installer from Tiny Core.    Until this is fixed, you should be able to use the installer from Core Plus to install a text only install, or from Tiny Core run "tc-install.sh" for the text based install like Robert suggested.
