I tried to install Core (using tc-install.sh) from a USB drive but I could not find the boot directory so I could set the path to core.gz and vmlinuz. I even tried "find / core.gz" and "find / vmlinuz" but it didn't find anything. Are these files not accessible from the LiveCD?

Yes, there is indeed a bug that prevents a text only install when running the installer from Tiny Core.    Until this is fixed, you should be able to use the installer from Core Plus to install a text only install, or from Tiny Core run "tc-install.sh" for the text based install like Robert suggested.
I have applied Brian's patch to fix this and the updated tc-install.tcz is now posted in the repository.
