Nvidia Driver Issues
« on: January 22, 2012, 01:41:04 PM »
Loading the nvidia-settings.tcz extension does not bring about the expected results. Instead of loading the proper drivers/modules and Xorg libraries with a nifty configuration utility, it causes the computer to seemingly crash. The screen is black and the computer does not respond the the "ctrl-alt-del" restart keystrokes. This issue did not occur before the Nvidia modules were rebuilt for the 4.x series. Prior to upgrading to 4.2.1, the nvidia-settings.tcz extension worked fine with 3.8.

Computer Info:
Dell Dimension 3100
Pentium 4 Processor
Core 4.2.1
Nvidia GeForce 6200 (PCI, from EVGA)

If anybody has a solution to resolve this issue, I would really appreciate it. Until then, I'll have to play Doom3, Cave Story + and Super Meat Boy on Windows XP.

as a quick workaround, use Xorg76 without xorg.conf ?
I know, this is leaving the issue.. but you can come back another time.
This is what I have done on 4 different PC the last weeks.. and its goood (1 NVIDIA and rest Intel/MGA..)
AMD K6-IIIATZ 550MHz MB DFI K6xv3/+66
P4 HP DC7100 3GB 3GHz
Samsung NC10 boot from SD card port (via USB reader)
.. all TinyCore proofed

Thanks for the tip. I really miss playing games with that card... at least I can play a few of the games with the integrated graphics card, that one still works fine.
Do you know what the issue is? I've tried tracing it by manually loading up the dependencies one at time, but I haven't found the culprit yet.

2 grafic cards the same time in 1 pc?
I never tried.

you used already a lot Mr. Google? personally I would start there.
example google "Nvidia GeForce 6200 xorg.conf" gives in
https://www.linuxquestions.org/questions/showthread.php?p=3142705#post3142705
==========
Option "DynamicTwinView" "false"

This will fix the 50Hz refresh problem. For more details see this post
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/show...52#post1421852
==========

in other words, I would look what others already achieved for an xorg.conf with the card.
AMD K6-IIIATZ 550MHz MB DFI K6xv3/+66
P4 HP DC7100 3GB 3GHz
Samsung NC10 boot from SD card port (via USB reader)
.. all TinyCore proofed

Well, the computer acts like it only has one graphics card (a feature of the bios).
I don't think that the issue is with the .conf file, because loading the drivers causes the computer to become unresponsive. If it were the .conf file, then I think that I would only have an issue with getting a working desktop. However, loading the driver extension from the console (not aterm but the actual black n' white straight-from-the-70's console that occupies the entire screen without X running) causes the computer to halt.
I will consult google for more information. Worse comes to worse, I'll try compiling the driver from source (I haven't had much luck doing that... not even the prism54 usb drivers... that darn netgear ma101). Any worse than that, I'll have to complacently wait for a fix from someone more skilled than I.
But, thanks for the help, Floppy. I really appreciate it.

I'll have to give that try when it's ready.

Hi Pseudoman
I don't see a driver for your card in this package.
